as always, her back arm tail things are based off christmas tree worms/spirobranchus, because they're really friggin cool

this does trigger a spike on progress and instability in the world, however. unrestrained growth led to a power grab as the creation god couldn't keep up with her own creation's activity, and they were forced to fight among themselves. and that's where the story of piper and her friends begin.

as the only remaining ruhrir, and having the powers of the god of decay, sleep's powers are exponentially stronger than the typical ruhrir. she finds her powers quite gruesome though, and only uses them when really necessary.

their theme is decay, so their powers are strictly intended to help them deconstruct the world and send it back to useful building material (ash) for reuse. whether that's eating up forests or killing other things is up to the ruhrir, though they tend to appreciate creation as much as anyone

nighttime is when the ruhrir would emerge from their "burrows" (underground cities) to bask in the dustfall and moonlight, absorbing sand with their worm tails and collecting reserves in ash glass jars

for both though, they rely on "activated dust" to function. aloraxi's dust has two states, a black "ash" form and a gold "sand" form. the top layer of dust becomes activated throughout the desert day and floats into the sky, where it cascades down again at dusk

ruhrir powers are kinda weird cuz normally you're born as either a striker (kraika) or a scribe (sinka). kraika get the hemeokinesis powers, sinka get the bootleg shadowhunter rune magic. sleep and her brother were born with one, but were corrupted by their upbringing and unlocked the other skillset

from then on, she and raz wandered the desert as she learned to control her powers, getting closer to each other along the way. she adopted sleepless as her new name to forget her past, though raz still uses a reclaimed version of her old name to keep things personal between them

rasil (see earlier art) caught wind of her and felt so bad she started hanging out with sleep. being the pacifist she is, sleep refused to let her do anything to her partner, so they endured it up to the point where her little brother, who she was separated from eaely on, came back to free her

in aloraxi, dreams and shadows are interlinked. you inhabit your reflection when you're sleeping. losing your shadow means you can't dream at all. hence her nickname, sleepless.
when you're missing a shadow, though, you tend to attract attention, particularly from dream demons...

the place she grew up in was fucked up as *shit*, though. it basically took your negative vibes and multiplied it. being sold off to a marriage she didn't want, losing a child to domestic abuse, and enduring the aftermath broke her to the point where she lost her shadow

but again, she doesn't really wanna, and the role was just kinda thrust upon her. she didn't even know she was ruhrir until an incident involving her first abusive partner, where she lost so much blood she thought she shoulda died

sleep's magic is dependent not on her blood, but the sand around her. sand/"dust" is the base of all life in her world, and her entire schtick is returning the world back to where it came. hence the worm idea! she absorbs the sand around her to break stuff down even more

eventually they kinda started powercreeping every other species in the world tho so i kinda had to get rid of them. still love the idea though so i cut down to one core character with a very simple premise: a personification of entropy that really doesn't wanna be

ruhrir/wanderers a bit of a mess of everything i was obsessed with back in high school: disintegrate in the sun like vampires, draw marks into their skin like shadowhunters, and do Whacky Blood Magic with some hemeokinesis because body horror is fun

unprompted lore dump cuz i spent way too long on this and need a place to vent
basically sleep's the last living member of blood mages that all went nuts and tried assimilating everything. she's a pacifist and would rather not be the endling of a bunch of psychopaths, it is what it is
