I always think of how fish experience being caught by herons - you're happily swimming in a pond, and suddenly a gigantic beak pierces the sky, grabs you and lifts you. You get a glimpse of a whole unknown universe existing beyond yours. And then you get swallowed whole.

in the old times before digital cameras you had to weave a tapestry of your bird sightings and then post them on some castle wall

Adding to that, Buenaventura Durruti had this to say about Stalin and the USSR:

Eh, yo vivo en el barrio de Manhattan donde están haciendo el proyecto piloto este! Acepto entrevistas y preguntas. El otro día vi uno de los camiones nuevos vaciando un contenedor y casi me echo a llorar en la calle.

That's the gate to the Calahorra tower that protects the entrance to the Roman bridge in Cordoba. The earlier chunks of that wall are probably 11th century.

Oh yeah that's the best strategy, spray and pray! Usually when I try to get swallows in flight 50% of the resulting photos are completely empty of birds and the remaining 50% are blurry 😅 But once in a while I get something decent.

A couple of days ago I saw a green heron trying and failing to eat a huge fish and it kind of traumatized me

If the plane was going to crash I guess the 200 flies could have just opened one of the doors and flown away before hitting the ground.

My first Artisanal Imagery-generated pictures look amateurish, but this is expected in such a new tech. Artisanal Imagery learns from its output so it will improve with time and the quality will get better!

My mom rescued a little kid drowning in a crowded shallow pool while their parents were chatting just a few feet away!

This is not the kind of damage a future administration will be able to undo with some supportive legislation here, a big funding bill there. One cannot undo this disaster by reversing these measures any more than one can rebuild a bombed out city by stopping the bombs and restoring electrical power.

I know that's how it is with waterfowl chicks but it's still sad ☹️ Here in NY we have the Wild Bird Fund www.wildbirdfund.org, they go above and beyond to rescue birds in situations like this!

I'm pretty sure the Qataris have installed a self-destruct device on the plane, we just have to ask them for the remote.

Also keep in mind that the Central Park Loop is a very wide road! We're not talking about narrow trails in here, there's plenty of space for everyone. This is what commuting by bike through Central Park looks like:

You would imagine that being bright safety orange they would be easy to find, but somehow they manage to camouflage surprisingly well!
