All of these things can be true at the same time.

This brings it home! I'll make a guess that tankers and container ships are even bigger now. I'd still prefer to take my chances dodging tankers while crossing the English channel than dodging traffic in London

Disaster adverted. I dropped the seat half an inch and it has transformed the ride. Will have to see what else I can do to improve my cycling 😊 Celebrating at the pub

i don’t think some americans understand the degree people outside their borders have to watch US domestic politics because of how US decisions can have significant consequences for us. i hope we can reach a place where we don’t have to worry about that, in the way americans never do about us.

Out today in Nature, our paper on the drivers of the record 2023 summer heating of the North Atlantic. Temperatures warmed to record levels in just a few months. The impacts on climate & ecosystems were severe. A thread on how this work came about and what we found.👇👇🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

From 6 July, a free reservation is needed to take bikes on the Calais-Paris TER trains. A good thing, as (a) no danger of 10 people turning up for 4 bike spaces and (b) these trains now actually show up when you add a bike to a Calais-Paris booking at SNCF-connect.com. www.seat61.com/bike-by-trai...

Do autonomous cars know how to behave at Zebra crossings? Asking on behalf of the 12 year old cyclists who enjoy racing me to them.

I decided to become a journalist aged fifteen after reading ‘1984’ and being appalled at the thought that governments could rewrite history. Orwell knew the USSR did it. Now China pretends the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen. It did. I was there, and saw it for myself.
