Nice water tower venue for @tressiemcphd.bsky.social passionately defending libraries as third spaces at Biscuits and Banjos in Durham. #biscuitsandbanjos

Some good news for this Friday. This astonishing group of people have spun up ERICA, the ERIC archive. www.datarescueproject.org/erica-to-the... #GLAMS #Skybrarians #AcademicSky

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

Any citizen concerned about biomedical research should comment. Care about #cancer, #Alzheimer’s, #Parkinson’s, #autoimmune diseases, #mental health, #vaccines, etc. ? Please comment! It could be as simple as “I don’t want unqualified political appointees controlling biomedical research projects”

This week you'll start seeing reporting that DOGE's special government employees (SGEs) have 130-day terms that expire shortly. This has no basis in fact. When those people *don't* leave their jobs, perhaps then the puzzled reporters will actually take 10 minutes to research their claims.

A tiny happy thing: A colleague and I decided to do a few low-key National Poetry Month activities in our library, including a "Take a Poem" basket. We brought out the basket last Thursday and left it at the reference desk. Yesterday we got an email: all the poems had been taken, did we have more?

Or even better “How the Federal Government Destroyed an Incredibly Successful, Durable Public-Private Partnership in Few Short Weeks”

Real time narration of the Senate inquiry into the #titanic sinking, which began as soon as possible after the Carpathia docked in NYC

AMANDACON would include a villanelle open mic, many bluegrass and oldtime jams in the parking lot, and an unconference on persistent identifiers and persistent myths in the scholarly literature

Approaching the Ambrose Channel, the Carpathia was now besieged by dozens of smaller boats, each with newspaper reporters shouting for stories. Apart from brief statements there had been no details of the disaster from the Carpathia. #Titanic

There’s a Matthew Sweet song in the latest ep of this Jon Hamm Apple TV+ series which seems a weird choice for the Gen Alpha characters performing it but I hope it helps in his stroke recovery

I have carpenter bees in my deck rail and while I don’t actually mind that they’re hollowing it out they sure are making annoying sounds. Not buzzing: sort of frictiony clicking.

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

This story gets at one of my immediate reactions when I read that letter: that it didn’t seem like Ed Martin realizes that anyone can submit to an academic journal. Anyone willing to have their work read and critiqued before a publication decision is made, that is.

I know many academic journal editors here - who else is getting these letters?

@karenmcgrane.bsky.social Hi, Karen, I don't think we've met but I'm an old friend of Tim's. (Okay mostly online but we have met IRL.) My org @crossref.bsky.social is looking for some IA help -- RFP here: www.crossref.org/blog/request...

Would anyone who's used a read and publish deal to publish a journal article be willing to be interviewed by a student doing a masters dissertation about why? Please let me know! (And please RT)

I can’t believe this is real life. I’m so angry.

Everyone should be following Real Time Titanic this month. I’m learning a lot.

One year ago, on April 16, 2024, the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information was launched. In this blogpost, we highlight some of the developments during this past year: barcelona-declaration.org/news//202504...

Oh we still have some poems that rhyme: only an ignoramus would say we don’t. Try A. E. Stallings, Oxford Professor of Poetry, on refugees. “My love, I’m grateful tonight Our listing bed isn’t a raft Precariously adrift As we dodge the coast-guard light” www.literarymatters.org/1-1-empathy/

Kai Ryssdal is becoming the Joker and I am here for it

This grant program, which has a total budget of less than a million dollars per year and helps approximately 60 small institutions care for their collections each year was officially cancelled for 2025 and may never be back. I am heartbroken. #neh

I love the theme song to Slow Horses.

Many people thought they were spam. Even research offices were scared to open them.

This guy Alfred Nourney, a Titanic survivor who lied about being a baron and refused to share blankets with others on board the Carpathia, sold cars in the 1920s. He reminds me of a certain contemporary anti-empathy car salesman and fraudster.

New for @indyweek.bsky.social - IMLS terminated a $330k grant to the Pauli Murray Center, writing in its notice that the grant, which funded a staff position + community programming at the historic site, "no longer serves the interest of the United States and the IMLS Program."
