PLAY THIS (archaeology) GAME! Katrine Haydock, one of our brilliant undergraduates has developed a video game for her dissertation to understand the impact of archaeological methods on gameplay. Please play it and take the survey. 🏺 katrinehaydock.itch.io

I couldn’t bring myself to buy these. I’ve seen better haniwa gatcha… I can’t believe I now have standards for haniwa merchandizing.

Jomon Dogū Bibi-chan made an appearance at the Sapporo Snow Festival!!!

Cultural heritage is on the list 🏺

Every archaeologist in the US needs to be proactively organizing against the erasure of cultural heritage 🏺

Never not thinking about this edo period drawing of hammerhead sharks 🥹

DIGRA Australia 2025 games conference digraa.org (5-7 Feb) is at UniSA, Adelaide South Australia. The schedule is up, to attend is free (presenters must join DIGRAA but free for students) and we have a few (free!) tickets left at events.humanitix.com/digraaustral... #conference #games #Adelaide

@killgrove.bsky.social shared the fabulous Doban-kun, and I would also love y’all to meet Bibi-Chan. This queen is from the Final Jomon period and was excavated from a the Bibi 4 site in Chitose, Hokkaido. Is she a seal, a duck, or something otherworldly? We’re not sure, but I think she’s neat.

My son!

Don't Panic! How to fight fascism as an archaeologist. Hey, archaeologists! As archaeologists, we tend to be the doing sort, the busybodies shoveling and sorting, keeping and caring, custodians of time, places, people, it's time to lean into that! blacktrowelcollective.wordpress.com/2024/11/13/d...

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Archaeologist: Oh, we call those sterile layers, actually.

TTRPG Creators: please, just say no to "AI." No AI background music, no AI-generated NPCs, no AI character art or podcast covers. It's *all* theft and it's *all* destructive.

Could marriage equality finally pass in Japan? A ruling from the Fukuoka High Court last week is putting pressure on legislators to act. Now, one report says there may be enough votes in the House of Representatives to make it happen. https://buff.ly/3VG7qei

A workplace convo in Japanese: Dr. U: What did you make Mako for his birthday? ama: A 'cake' of high-grade beef. Coworker: Oh, a 'beefcake' (in English.) ama:*Explains beefcake while laughing* Dr. U: Then what do you call a guy in his 40s who looks good but doesn't have muscle." ama: *pause* Daddy

This is my favorite little guy. I have stickers of him because I can’t and won’t stop.

I’m visiting Lake Akan and Akan Kotan with a friend conducting fieldwork with her students on Indigenous Tourism. It is always a pleasure to learn about the community, their culture, and its intersection with tourism (which as of late has increasingly overlapped with heritage management).

Paging archaeologists and shell isotopes folks!!🏺🧪 If anyone would be willing to chat with an archaeology grad student working with oxygen and carbon isotopes in California mussel and abalone please send me a DM! She's drowning in data and needs support she isn't getting from her committee 😔

This is a dangerous precedent to set. The fact that both tribal affiliations and pronouns were targeted demonstrates that we need to have solidarity across many different issues and uplift each others voices. #Indigenous #LBGTQIA2S+

I’m grateful for new followers! And I’m trying not to constantly vent as I finish my #phd thesis, but it’s hard to ignore how much this process weighs on me. A complete lack of feedback, guidance, and support makes me feel so far adrift. How do you stay grounded when you are navigating this alone?

who would like a slice of my venn piagram

Sometimes I also draw about stuff at the intersection of #archaeology and other things I’m into at the time like video games or ttrpg. With the push to finish my dissertation, I haven’t had/made as much time for arting. I miss it very much.

Going through the dumpster fire, and I was reminded of all the art I do for the two campaigns I DM. I collaborate on two long games- one is about 5 years running and the other is creeping up on 3. So grateful for the people and stories. And for a chance to make so many tokens.

One of the perks of traveling for research is I get to hunt down Pokelids, or manhole covers featuring regional Pokemon that are supposed support tourism. Hokkaido’s representative is Vulpix. They are featured with other Pokemon tied to local features- like Mareep for Shibetsu’s sheep.

Thank you to all the new followers! Besides my art, I love to share my passion for #archaeology in Japan. I often create posts and infographics, share the work of others, and post about my trips to sites, museums, and excavations. It would be a dream to be able to do more art about archaeology.

Scrolling through the archives brought up a bit of nostalgia for when I had time for more art. #criticalrole has been such a wonderful source of inspiration, especially during campaign 2. I’m also grateful for it being a means to meet friends and tell stories through ttrpg.

Would it be odd to transfer old posts and artwork I enjoyed over here? I feel like I’m trying to save things that matter from a house fire. I can’t just watch them burn.

If you’re into archaeology, gaming, or just curious about how cultural heritage pops up in unexpected places, check out the fabulous piece by Emily & Cory on Archaeology and Indigeneity in The Legend of Zelda & my response! I had to make art for it. #archaeology #legendofzelda epoiesen.carleton.ca
