i think we all really need to lean into whatever stupid little bullshit we're into

man, we had so many chances to avoid all of this over the last ten years, and it just really sucks we somehow ended up in this specific timeline.

I am begging people not to look to the NYT for coverage of what's happening. The BBC, Le Monde, Ajazeera and others will have more truthful coverage.

"i asked chatgpt" yeah well i went to the doctor, i went to the mountains, i looked to the children, i drank from the fountains there's more than one answer to these questions pointing me in a crooked line and the less I seek my source for some definitive closer I am to fine

Interesting observations about why single family home construction (vs apartments) is particularly vulnerable to immigration enforcement bsky.app/profile/step...

The elite Democrat fantasy is getting a huge youth turnout, but only if those young people vote for 70-year-old boomers who don't want more housing, are OK with a police state and fossil fuels, and don't give a damn about crimes against humanity in Gaza

Seems to me that the worst possible time to shy away from building a strong social safety net based upon local progressive taxation is when the federal government is doing fascism.

“It is not easy to vote for higher taxes, but I am skeptical that Oregonians' pocketbooks are really better off if we continue to let our roads crumble,” said Pham. www.opb.org/article/2025...

Not to discount the general upbeat energy of the Mamdani campaign, but to be clear, rank choice voting does ~wonders~ to actually incentivize this sort of behavior

something kinda magical, vaguely sports-fandom-esque, about tuning in for a big committee vote you're not entirely sure how it's going to turn out. honestly emotionally feels similar to watching the nba finals last night

The Los Angeles Times is really highlighting all the ways that reckless immigration enforcement, designed to also terrorize legal immigrants, is wrecking the economy of the entire city. L.A. bus ridership plummets amid fears of immigration arrests. www.latimes.com/california/s...

“ICE in just a few weeks has transformed itself into the closest thing that the US has ever had to a ‘secret police,’ with more seemingly culturally in common with the Klan nightriders of Reconstruction than their federal agency brethren like the FBI or ATF.” @garrettgraff.bsky.social

Lander is an eminently qualified candidate who could have seen the failure of his won campaign as a reason to be embittered against Mamdani (as, ahem, others did) but instead is pivoting to united the left-liberal vote and dampen Cuomo’s chances. Profoundly decent, stand up thing to do.

how is this real life

Gotta admit, “Yes, cers” is a bit odd. As my wife said, it sorta’ has Teenjus vibes.

pacers cookin

This is so horrifying. This moment is one that requires some strategic reflection from all of us, to think critically about how we can actually achieve ICE abolition in Oregon and across the country. First: let the experiences of people impacted be the drivers of strategy.

Whenever I suggest that the US could lose the 28 Olympics people say “you fool the IOC is so corrupt they don’t care.” The IOC actually very much does care that athletes can *attend the fucking Olympics*.

if someone tech-smart knows how i can get around this britain-only black out, please let me know because i want to watch this

"To recognize streamlined as things that magically circulate is to reveal the governing logic of the Interstates: circulation as a product."

holy shit everything about this is maddening but I think fabricating a DUI so they could say he was a criminal was the part where I audibly hissed

while i think that the "Portland Riot" would have been the god-tier moniker, in ostensible reference to a certain feminist music scene but also as a subtle nod to our politics, as an old-head whose not-out-but-bisexual aunt took me to a few WNBA games as a kid, i love seeing the old name resurface

I will continue to scream from the rooftops that the number one thing stopping people who want to have families from starting them is the absolute disdain American policymakers have for young families.

The fact that Cuomo has so much developer support is basically confirmation of what I wrote about developer cartels in @thenation.com. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

The first time New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani saw ice, the ice had been brought into the city by an old man in khakis accompanied by a penguin. The old man in khakis had trained the penguin to dance, or so he said; mostly, the penguin simply stood nearby, molting sadly in the summer heat.

can't help but think about how much i overrelied on google translate for homework in french classes, and how abysmally little of the language i ever actually retained. what a colossal waste it'd have been if i just used that sort of service for the rest of my education instead of just doing the work

"In Oregon, tech giants are using their usual playbook. They’re threatening a news blockade in the state and a few publishers who received grants are criticizing the model, creating fear and doubt among legislators." #orleg www.seattletimes.com/opinion/oreg...

coolest thing that's happened in The Building in years www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...

I'll have more to say tomorrow, but I'll note that we observe an increasing share of higher income earners in the county - a class who is often referred to as our tax base, and who is apparently fleeing due to this tax. Chart by economist Mary King.

Jinkx Monsoon, the Portland-rasied actress, singer and "Queen of All Queens" on "RuPaul's Drag Race," will star in 'Oh, Mary!" created by Oregon-born Tony winner Cole Escola.

and the legislator who got that passed was murdered 4 days ago by an evangelical. not unrelated!

Wild how the Fed chair saying that *entire regions of the United States* won’t be able to get a mortgage in the next decade barely registered as a news event

Every additional home we build in Portland is one more home for a family who needs to access gender-affirming care. If Oregon wants to be a sanctuary for LGTBQ+ Americans, we simply must build more housing for everyone who wants (and needs) to call Oregon home. bsky.app/profile/wafo...
