Upon receiving the news that four of the City's Deputy Mayors have submitted their resignations, I sent the following letter to @nycmayor.

This absolutely will make flying less safe. Maybe not today. But inevitably. Conceivably *this* will finally get public attention? About the danger of just blowing up structures built with care over decades? Maybe some GOP Sen/Rep will think: "I'd rather not be on the wrong side of this one"?

FBI cancels community outreach programs for seniors

This country has seen some bad moments in the 61 years, 5 months, 16 days I’ve been on this Earth. But it has never, ever before come close to the supertoxic level of stupidity, mendacity, narcissism, nihilism, and moral apathy that threaten to destroy it today.

🚨 SCOOP: DOGE is seeking personal taxpayer data at IRS, sources tell me. 🚨 Trump admin is pushing IRS to agree to an MOU that would give DOGE access to granular data on every taxpayer, business and nonprofit in the country.

I know Stathis. He was a colleague of mine at the University of Chicago. He is a pretty buttoned-down scholar. For him to tweet this out is… something.

BREAKING WAPO: Elon Musk's DOGE is seeking access to a heavily-guarded IRS system that includes detailed financial information about every taxpayer, business, and nonprofit in the country — sparking alarm within the tax agency. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

JUST IN: A federal judge in Washington state, who blocked Trump's executive order re: transgender health care, says it is unconstitutional in multiple ways, including usurping Congress' power of the purse storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

this is really fucking bad. what the fuck.

Here we go: The Acting Solicitor General has asked #SCOTUS to immediately freeze (and vacate) the district court order that had temporarily reinstated Hampton Dellinger atop DOJ’s Office of Special Counsel: utexas.box.com/s/h0m91y7nes... I’ll have *much* more on this in tomorrow’s “One First.”

This is a program for teenagers with serious disabilities who are finishing high school and transitioning to their next steps in life. Trump just axed it, effective immediately, in the middle of the night, with no notice.

In light of the news that DOJ leadership is forcing career prosecutors to either dismiss the criminal case against Eric Adams or be fired, it seems like a good time to remind everyone that the judge can refuse to dismiss. That rule exists precisely in order to prevent corrupt dismissals.

I mis-added earlier, here's corrected post: How many scientists and interior workers were fired today? Between news article estimates and social posts, I count over 10k: 5200 @ NIH 1200-2000 @ DOE 800 @ USDA 2,300 @ Dept. of Interior 1,300 @ CDC (I haven't heard any FDA, EPA, or NASA numbers)

In its totality what's happening at HHS & NIH is a Musk/Trump effort to shutdown almost all cancer cure research in the US. No more new cures. Cancer's brand is really in the dumps. It polls terribly. This is a political argument that is straightforward to make. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/nih-a...

There have been many signs of gross incompetence in the Musk-Trump sledgehammer approach. Now this: "Multiple current and former employees described the situation as 'a national security crisis.'"

It should be a source of profound embarrassment that a bunch of FedSoc lifers are taking a more vocal and principled stand against the corrupt Eric Adams deal than most elected Dems.

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

👀 "If no lawyer within earshot of the President is willing to give him that advice, then I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me." -- AUSA Hagan Scotten, SDNY.

Elon Musk and DOGE have failed to cut spending despite creating massive chaos in the federal government, according to a review of official data by The Economist. In fact, spending might actually be up since Trump took office.

More than 60 major Trump moves align with proposals in Project 2025.

Hagan Scotten, who wrote this spectacular resignation letter, was an army ranger for 8 years, top of his law school class (Harvard) & a John Roberts law clerk. Not exactly a candidate for Trump’s liberal deep state.

The DOGE website is reportedly hosted on non-government servers, not secured against database attacks and can be easily defaced, 404 reports www.404media.co/anyone-can-p...

“‘It was so fucking stupid,’ says…federal official, who was on the receiving end of the “Karen”-style DOGE threats about calling the police — in this case, Elon Musk. “I can’t believe this is how they’re blowing up the Constitution, with this little nerd army … God help us. What else can I say?””

a pretty intense letter written with clarity, propulsion and verve.

Justice Dept lawyers are showing other public servants, members of Congress and the public - not to mention quivering media moguls - what it means to be a citizen of a democracy. You do not bend the knee nor kiss the ring of tyrants.

Beyond Pete Hegseth lacking the experience to lead the Department of Defense, many of Trump’s nominees for deputies and undersecretaries are also unqualified. During crises, few will have the knowledge to offer steadier guidance: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

After reports circulated Weds night of the State Department's intent to purchase Tesla vehicles, "the document was edited, at 9:12 p.m., and now says the federal contract is for $400 million worth of 'armored electric vehicles,' but the word 'Tesla' was removed. @npr.org www.npr.org/2025/02/13/g...

At this point, there are only two options: A) Elon is so dishonest that he is willing to peddle obvious lies to score PR points B) Elon really is this stupid

Questions of standing are going to complicate these suits against the Administration. Ideally, Congress would ask the courts to make the President obey the law—protecting agencies that the legislature has established and disbursing funds it authorized. It's Congress that has been undermined.

Russ Vought set up a CFPB snitch line where you can report any work by the agency still trying to do its job as legally mandated by Congress. It would be a real shame if this was flooded with false tips and wild goose chases... x.com/CFPB_tipline

If you understand that apartheid was an economic system first, and a brutally violent system of social segregation second, you'll understand how Elon Musk is trying to update the principles from his homeland, and bring about a neo-apartheid system in the US. My latest in @thenation.com

100% of the "fraud" DOGE has found is phony/made up This is and has been Musk's schtick for two decades. When do the masses finally get it? (don't answer that)

Commercial real estate for older office buildings is barely hanging on, trading at massive discounts, with growing defaults on mortgages & related bonds. Great time for the government to terminate thousands of leases! The economics of the DOGE fire sale, from me: prospect.org/economy/2025...

Conflict of interest? The State Department’s procurement forecast lists Tesla as the recipient of the largest expected contract, with Marco Rubio’s department planning to purchase $400 million worth of “Armored Tesla” vehicles.

Interesting: the State Department’s procurement forecast detailing a $400 million order for "armored Tesla" has now been edited to "armored electric vehicles." The document shows the edit was made tonight at 9:12 p.m. -- after it was highlighted in reports

WSJ: "Does President Trump understand money? Not money as in cash, but the supply of money, the price of money as measured by interest rates, and their impact on inflation? The answer would appear to be no" www.wsj.com/opinion/dona... via @WSJopinion

The fact that NBC can (accurately) call the Administrative Procedure Act “obscure” just shows how little Americans know about how their government works. It literally is one of the most important laws ever enacted by Congress.

“The TLDR is this: Elon has no idea what he’s talking about. Want proof? If we followed Elon’s own logic, then he too would be guilty of being in on this sinister government gravy train. Take a journey with me.”

Okay what is going on here. Are the accounts at a private banking entity? Does the federal government have direct debit permission set up? So many questions as to how Treasury instructed this payment. (Via NY Post’s Craig McCarthy)

I will reiterate the market will not tolerate the the loss of the rule of law. Didn't happen today, but it going to happen sooner rather than later IMO. Whistling past the graveyard right now.

NEW from me: Russ Vought was on the verge of breaking the mortgage market by shutting down a core function provided by CFPB. But he blinked, and in so doing revealed that regulation is actually pretty important. prospect.org/economy/2025...

A great example of a story where being a policy nerd (here: mortgages) intersects with understanding the political economy of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

this is the kind of constitution thinking you get from parking lot lawyer. separation of powers means President is ultimate authority on the whole govt? that's what federal means. good lord.

I think it's worth repeating plainly that a federal judge halted Musk's federal funding freeze nearly two weeks ago but funds are still very much being frozen in violation of the court order.
