My 14-year-old son asked me “Mom, I get how the govt can ban DEI in federal jobs but how can it go after private companies for doing DEI??” Now I have an answer for him.

I took a class on post-WW2 German culture in college in 2000, in which we learned that Germans were the least likely of any European country to say they were proud of their country. It’s a crime to deny the Holocaust there, and there are many meaningful museums/memorials. It’s not perfect, but…🤷🏻♀️

My life is full of people who do not fit into that tight corner. My friends, my children, their friends… the best I can do in this moment is continue to believe them when they tell me who they are, and stand firm with them when someone thinks they know better.

When I 1st encountered people who didn’t live within the gender binary- like 9 years ago!- I was like: this is going to be our generation’s issue the way race was for those previous: something that we are going to learn from young people about and crack our heads open a little to get.
