Worth pointing out again that there’s a lot of — proper! good! — American outrage about the ICE facility being run by a private contractor, but Yarls Wood in the UK was previously run by G4S and is now run by Serco

Tired: Banning Trans & NB people from public life Inspired: Banning the 2-3% of the population who think swearing at shop staff is acceptable from public life

🧵NOT BY ME, this is a post from someone who wants to remain anonymous but works extensively with trans people pre-transition. They were asked by someone “why do you think that’s so much [coverage of trans people] in the news at the moment?” This was their response:

Not only this — and this is a big deal — but how on earth will the police ensure that male officers won’t be allowed to search cis women who look a bit butch and can’t prove they’re women?

It’s alright to cancel plans, it’s alright to flee into the desert after killing a man, it’s alright to witness god and accept your destiny as the liberator of the Israelites, it’s alright to unleash ten horrible plagues on all of Egypt until Pharaoh agrees to let you go. Do what you need to cope

For @thefence.bsky.social I'm collecting EXTREMELY PETTY MONEY SAVING TIPS for the coming recession, eg using white bread instead of pencil erasers or buying a 1981 calendar for 2026 because the days will line up. If any of you can beat this absurdly niche example I've just been sent, I'm all ears.

The summer weather was bad when I was 7. I wrote a complaining letter to Ian McCaskill as I thought he chose the weather instead of predicting it. He was an absolute sweetie and wrote a kind, handwritten letter back to me. That's how I learned what meteorologist is.

it's the anniversary of the time a grandma accidentally cut off the whole country's internet while digging around for scrap metal

if you've ever wondered why i go on about ADHD a lot, this is a huge part of it. airing a struggle makes it easier for other people also struggling and not really understanding why, so early on i decided to just let it be a feature of my life, because being lonely with it is the worst.

Somehow it always seems to come down to "blame people for being neurodivergent", rather than "fund a system which provides decent diagnosis and support". Btw, a lot of that money goes into helping neurodivergent individuals function in this world, and therefore able to work. Without it more can't.

what’s the most humiliating way you can imagine a vampire being killed? it’s reckon “getting staked by a spork”

The Vagina Museum is just one month away from closing. Forever. A perfect storm of circumstances means that we may have to close our doors permanently and cease all digital activities. But we're not going to go down without a fight. Save the Vagina Museum. www.gofundme.com/f/btscc2

Oh wow I’ve just looked at this properly again against the fee rises due to NI contribution rule changes. And when our toddler goes from having 15 to 30 free hours a month, the cost will… go up by £9 a month.

I've been working with Jewish students (or been one myself) for 14 years, and this is by far the most dangerous step in campus free speech I've seen. For all those who fear 'cancel culture', the disappearing of a Palestinian with a green card is a huge rights violation that we must condemn.

This is what 2025 feels like

It has come to my attention that some folks still have not seen the term "acoustic bike" (as in, not an ebike) and in case that's you, today is your lucky day

“‘Are you still willing to help me?’ ‘I am,’ said Mr. Butterbur. ‘More than ever. Though I don’t know what the likes of me can do against, against—’ he faltered. ‘Against the Shadow in the East,’ said Strider quietly. ‘Not much, Barliman, but every little helps.’” JRR Tolkien, LotR I.10.

Happy "Microsoft trying to force CoPilot subs" day in the UK for all who celebrate. (They just pinged me my renewal notice with it carefully worded to sound like a compulsory general price increase). 1) Go to your account page 2) Hit cancel 3) Change sub back.

A man in Indiana made an AT-AT costume for his horse, intending to only get a few pictures before removing it. When he took off the headpiece the horse got upset and insisted that he put it back on, which made the horse happy again. Now the horse isn't allowing him to remove any piece of the costume
