Kinda funny AI commercials don't have a person asking the AI to do the kind of task they'd actually ask of a person with a brain. At various points I've tested AI products by asking them to do things I'd ask of an intern, secretary, or paralegal. 100% failure rate.

Sorry to hear Brian Wilson has died. The Beach Boys were the soundtrack of my summers, from "Surfin' Safari" on.

Today's reading distraction: "The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech's Hype and Create the Future We Want" (2025) by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna. amzn.to/3FPz1VV

Think of data like an ink drop, and disclosure like a swimming pool. Once the ink is in the pool, you can’t… just… get it back. #DOGE

At the same time, in court: “We own none of this. Not our fault. And even if it was our fault, no one suffered any damages. That credit card fraud? Couldn’t be us. Identity theft? Probably the individual’s fault.”

The Onion does not use AI in any way. Our newspaper is proudly made by actual living people. AI makes bad, boring shit, and people make art. Subscribe to us instead: membership.theonion.com

Just saw a TikTok of a kiosk in a Chinese airport that when you look at it, it shows you your flight info and which way to walk to your gate. Like, *your* flight info. Fast and reliable facial recognition is here and we need to think hard about how to regulate it, not hide from it.

“Move fast and break things.” #AI

The complaint alleges that the U.S. Government used Native Nations’ own funds to finance a program of prison-like boarding schools, spread throughout the United States, designed to separate Native children from their families, and destroy their language, customs, and cultural identities.

“…growing recognition that women’s pain should be treated.” Wild headline. Wait until you hear about what they do during a colposcopy.

Unfortunately, I get a lot of phone calls from individuals who have had their devices overtaken by malware, their accounts hacked, and lives totally disrupted. A government-provided resource to help folks clean up the damage and learn about cybercrime is necessary.

tough luck for all of us who don’t want to be doxxed www.wired.com/story/cfpb-q...

I have been saying—until I’m blue in the face, it seems—that data breaches do, in fact, hurt people even if the consequences aren’t immediately known. When a data aggregator creates a profile on you without consent, that is an invasion of privacy. #DataBreach #Privacy #Standing #ArticleIII

When you see the words “scalable alternative” it means that tech companies don’t want to pay for human feedback or license the work that trains AI.

Pretty simple, the District Court performs rewiew, the Circuit Court revieiews it, and then Supreme Court, upon a writ a covetes 1s bue bf, will revriew it.

Chatbots developed to flatter and affirm biases aren’t the model for friendships. Instead of pouring money into this, investment into “third spaces,” where real friendships can actually develop, should be prioritized. Kids try to find these third places online and it ain’t working.

One of the things that DOGE could’ve done to be *actually* useful…and a big missed opportunity…is use their efforts to modernize government websites to optimize them for mobile use. Have y’all ever tried to get a replacement passport card? State Department website is…yikes.

Hi! Let’s please stop moving unnecessarily fast and breaking (gestures around) everything. #AI #hallucinations

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight. 1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms" 2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral 3) How tools are productized is not neutral [rant]

The absolute decimation of third spaces is really harming our youth. Any Millennials remember being dropped off at a shopping mall without a cell phone, with a pre-determined pick-up spot and time? Literally training wheels for becoming an adult. Kids don’t have this now.

Tech companies are evolving AI faster than we can keep up. One of the (un)intended results? More fraud and attempted fraud. Especially as data brokers continue to buy and sell information about you without your consent. Amazing what scammers can do with info that makes it seem like they know you.

“[T]he average American sees an average of 14 scam messages and deepfakes on social media, via text and email, daily” but tell me again why no one is “injured” when a data breach happens…. We shouldn’t have to live like this. #Privacy #DataBreach #infosec

I hope that manufacturers know that there is a market for “dumb” appliances and products. I would gladly pay more money for a TV not to assess my emotions, please. Or a toothbrush that isn’t IOT and sending info to my insurance co. Can consumers *please* have a choice? #SmartTV #LG #Privacy

Stunning song called 2020 written for those who didn’t make it. Wish I had kept this going 40 seconds longer but…

Was just reading John Quincy Adams' oral arguments before SCOTUS in the Amistad case and this part seems, uh, pretty relevant

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

I really can’t overstress how insane this is from a security perspective. Apparently adversary espionage services get to play on easy mode for a few years.
