This was our "hypothetical" in my Media Law class on Wednesday... Glad to see the Associated Press standing up for itself and the American people.

They weren't kidding that 2025 is the Year of the Snake. Also known as Year of the White Dude at UT-Austin. Gross.

New filing: "Trump v. CBS (Harris's 60 Minutes interview)" Doc #45: Scheduling Order Download PDF | View Full Case #CL69332852

Anyone else's alarm bells going off watching UT-Austin churn through leadership this quickly? Call me crazy, but it seems like Greg Abbott and the Texas Legislature are running all the good folks outta Austin.

So far, the reporting on new UT interim president Jim Davis has been pretty lackluster regurgitating of press releases, but here's a gem that stands out: "He is the 1st UT president since 1899 who doesn’t have a teaching history." Read that again.

Right now, the courts are basically the only thing standing in the way of authoritarianism in this country. When the courts give way — as this one did — we're in real trouble. Allowing the government to control what citizens can say is antithetical to a democratic society.

REVEALED: we identified the operator of an overtly racist X account, "GlomarResponder," as ICE Assistant Chief Counsel James Rodden, based on an overwhelming number of biographical details matched through publicly available documents, other social media activity, and courtroom observation.

What's more alarming: that he has no teaching experience or that he's a former Ken Paxton lieutenant? So glad to be gone. I fear for all my UT-Austin colleagues.

The courts are doing an awful lot of constitutional heavy lifting these days. Even in the red states. Much of it because we have elected legislatures full of folks unwilling to stand up for the Constitution or speak out against authoritarian executive actions.

One of many, many reasons I have long advised my students not to change their names when they get married. Dealing with your state bar association is another one that's right up there...

Former copy editor here: Never had "Get barred from the Oval Office for refusing to update the AP Stylebook" on my BINGO card. We are living in wild (and dangerous) times. Threatening the Institutional Press to adopt your message or else is an authoritarian tactic. Full stop.

Make no mistake. This and many similar actions — including the new 'rotation' at the Pentagon — are a direct attempt by the Trump Administration to chill the Institutional Press and force them into submission. That should not happen — that *does not happen* — in democratic societies.

Holding public universities accountable has become increasingly challenging. Good to see @reporterscommittee.bsky.social get the win here, which means the public gets access to the information it deserves!

The text messages will get you every time... especially when they're covered by the state's open records law. "While Landry is not a defendant in the lawsuit, he is the head of the executive branch that includes the state’s four higher education systems." #FOI

I love a good editorial cartoon. The First Amendment was made for this stuff! #1A Credit: Bruce MacKinnon, Halifax Chronicle-Herald and Saltwire Network.

This case gets more interesting at every twist and turn. I'm glad the judge denied the request for the protective order. Many, but not all, of the records the Trustees need to uphold their fiduciary duties should be public. Judges must be skeptical when asked for confidentiality.

Is this the end of open government?

This administration is working to strip rights from people at every turn. I am horrified how destructive the last few days have been to the constitutional order. They’re reimagining the anti-canon.

Elon Musk is locking government employees out of government systems and demanding access to the government's entire payment network. This is not legal, of course. www.reuters.com/world/us/mus...

Taking down agency websites violates parts of the FOIA (EFOIA of 1996 etc), the Open Gov Data Act if it impacts data.gov, possibly the FRA depending what's going on behind the scenes, &, if docs are classified, possibly security clearance requirements - just to start

Stop giving me examples of what not to do for my media ethics class. I have enough already!

Last week when it was negative degrees here in PA, I pined for Texas. Then shenanigans like these make headlines, and my wintry new home state doesn't look so bad. Seriously, Texans. Demand better.

Digital security must be a top priority for all journalists. Few of us are teaching it to our students. Here's just one example of why it should be in every journalism class and/or training...

Great journalism resource that I wish we didn't need from The Marshall Project. Covering incarcerated populations is hard and will become even harder as the privatization of prisons increases under the Trump Administration.

So you don't all say I'm just doom and gloom, here's a bit of good news for you this morning... As a professor who often talks about whether government actions and actors are following the law as part of my classes, I have a vested interest in #1A and academic freedom protections for faculty.

This makes me sick to my stomach. -30-

So many reasons to dislike this man. Leave public broadcasting alone.

The marriage of MAGA and Big Tech is an existential threat to democracy, writes Accountable Tech co-founder and executive director Nicole Gill.

Quoted here along with @medialawprof.bsky.social and @franklomonte.bsky.social: "Especially with local news, we have to learn to band back together,” Sanders said. “The us against them of 2025 is us (the press) against them (the government).” rjionline.org/news/in-2025...

That didn't take long...

So happy to no longer be affiliated with the University of Texas and this utter garbage trying to be passed off as sincere, intellectual engagement. Thanks for calling it out, @anthonymkreis.bsky.social.

Trump FCC (again) sides with big telecom: axes proposed rules that would have prohibited your landlord and your ISP from striking sweetheart bulk billing deals that result in apartment residents paying more money for broadband:

More great insight on Trump Administration EOs and what's likely to transpire over the coming weeks...

‪"In essence, the Trump administration is claiming the unilateral power to at least temporarily 'impound' tens of billions of dollars of appropriated funds—in direct conflict with Congress’s constitutional power of the purse..."

If you're wondering what the Trump Administration OMB order halting virtually all federal assistance means and what's likely to transpire, @stevevladeck.bsky.social has a great explainer.

We are living in dangerous times for free speech. I don't like hate speech, but I also don't trust our government to decide what is and is not hate speech. #1A

"If a law paper was ever a 'page turner,' this one was it." #CareerGoals I think we nailed it, @medialawprof.bsky.social. Nobody cares what Reviewer #2 says anyway...

Happening now...

Tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET, @benjaminwittes.bsky.social, @sranderson.bsky.social, @annabower.bsky.social, @qjurecic.bsky.social, @alanrozenshtein.com, and Amelia Wilson will discuss the first batch of executive actions by President Trump in his second term, the legal challenges against them, and more.

"The Restoring Freedom of Speech" executive order, tho chock full of good sentiment, is blatantly political and lacks meaningful transparency measures to address actual jawboning: www.eff.org/deeplinks/20...

The White House press corps seems almost giddy that Trump is back in the White House. Reason: He gives access. “Despite his sometimes strident and sometimes even violent rhetoric about the press, he loves talking to us," one told CJR's @jakelahut.writes.news. Read ^^ that quote, again.
