The major parties rely more on preferences to win elections than ever before, our new analysis shows. “One of the great Australian innovations is the full preferential voting system, which guarantees that you cannot waste your vote,” said @browne90.bsky.social. #auspol

The injuries sustained by Hannah Thomas are just the latest in a long crackdown on the right to protest in Australia, @theshufflediary.bsky.social writes.

Thank you to @parismarx.com for speaking to me about Canada’s decision to drop its digital services tax on tech companies, under pressure from Trump www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/6/...

"When Will the West Stop Exploiting Women’s Rights for Imperial Aims?" Powerful piece from Fatima Bhutto, who says nothing about the US and Israel attacks on Iran were about 'liberating' Iranian women:

We just had an election where it was clear Australians do not want our govt suck up to Trump so it would be nice if the media can fk off with piling on “pressure” to increase Defence spending against the wishes of Australians just to appease a convicted criminal in the US.

We need your help! It's your last chance to support Australia Institute research with tax-deductible donations for our EOFY appeal. If you like our work showing how little tax fossil fuel multinationals pay or which policy measures can make housing more accessible, then chuck in a donation.

In a less imperfect world, Musk and Trump would be forever cast as killers of children, and this would be front-page news for months and the subject of Sunday sermons in every church.

What Nick’s (excellent) piece also demonstrates is that support for Israel’s policies (or just uncritically following Israel’s line) is not seen as a ‘political opinion’ - it’s the unquestionable ‘objective’ ground - despite all the evidence to the contrary

We like to pretend politics is all very complicated - while often failing to provide the context that tells the actual story www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/politic...

1/2 "the organised pro-Israel groups backgrounding journalists or haranguing ministers or board members have faced no consequences, despite the chaos they’ve caused. They haven’t been named or called to account in any way." @nickfeik.bsky.social nails it... nickfeik.substack.com/p/the-lattou...

Whacked on the BBC Glasto coverage to see what they were showing instead of Kneecap and caught Amy of Amyl & the Sniffers giving a pro Palestine speech... Beeb editors playing whack-a-mole

Artists and journalists have paid the price for having a political opinion. Nothing more – and sometimes barely even that. Lattouf, Sabsabi, Wyld, Sakr etc are only the most public cases; we’ll never know about those who were silenced, quietly excluded or denied opportunities in the first place.

Israel now blocked the most direct route for aid to Palestinians in Gaza. The campaign of mass starvation continues to accelerate as the Israelis continue to commit genocide. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

I can't share the article because it features his face .Cassius murderers have been sentenced to life. An accomplice got 12 years This is not justice because carcereal justice never is. They wont call the crime racist , the 4 people were hunting Aboriginal children.

This is an excellent story ($) from @crystaljane.bsky.social on the deliberate, pointed and entirely fabulous wardobe choices of @antoinettelattouf.bsky.social during her triumphant battle with the ABC. www.crikey.com.au/2025/06/27/a...

I think the new universities regular ATEC should make a rule — every time a university kills off a course like music or politics or sociology, they should also have to reduce the salary of the vice-chancellor by $100k

Oh this is not good. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

The @albomp.bsky.social govt is being awfully quiet about Lattouf v ABC Not even any expressions of "grave concern" about the craven capitulation, unlawful behaviour & derogation of public interest journalism by ABC senior management? No interest in the integrity of the national broadcaster?

There is still no baby formula allowed into Gaza. Israel is not only bombing and shooting a starving, exhausted civilian population, it’s banned baby formula. Babies under 6 months can only have breastmilk or formula. Their mothers are starving and have no milk. Milk. Must. Enter.

The world's richest Jeff was attacked by Venusians? No that's not right. But it sounds good! www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

hey quick question: is anyone in the government's leadership going to say anything about the ABC? surely a high profile unfair dismissal linked to managing cowing to a lobby group, and involving board meddling, is worth saying something? maybe even an investigation? some consequences for the board?

Foreign influence operations in Australia are worthy of far more discussion and exposing regardless of how uncomfortable it makes people who have accepted it as normal and those who have deliberately or inadvertently participated in them as marks www.theguardian.com/media/2025/j...

Israel killed 870 people in aid massacres and bombings in 12 days my friends. 4 more families are also completely gone from the registry. Many are missing.

Ed Husic breaks ranks to criticise Israel and express alarm over ‘fraying of rules-based order’ following US strikes

Extract from Lattouf judgement "ABC managers...extraordinarily sensitive to the risk of criticism by The Australian." Shocking, as the Murdoch media now has near zero influence on the Aus public, see recent research from @australiainstitute.org.au 1/3 www.judgments.fedcourt.gov.au/judgments/Ju...

The ABC sacked our colleague because of her political opinion and to appease a lobby group, the court found. And they spent more than $1 million on ridiculous defences including the she was never sacked and there is no such thing as a Lebanese race. Time for the ABC to rethink how it treats staff.

Sussan Ley says she doesn’t believe anyone in her position (LOTO) has the resolve she has to increase the number of women in the Liberal Party. She’s so resolved, she has no plan and is completely agnostic about how it should happen.

Massive landmark win for Antoinette Lattouf against the ABC, huge precedent for political opinion protection. Court finds she was sacked for her opinion opposing Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Banner day for workplace rights.

"...hopefully this verdict draws a line in the sand as far as managerial overreach is concerned.”

A pretty clear signal that the internal legal advice was: “there is no way to spin this as legal”; which, in fairness, is the only available assessment.

Reposting a Human Rights Watch report should not be seen as "controversial". Journalists rely on HRW and other major human rights bodies all the time to document human rights abuses by many many countries

Relevant para, I think.

OK, so in short: a pre-emptive kneejerk response to the lobby group bullying (of a staff member, for sharing a news item) that the ABC anticipated but that had not even happened yet has cost Australian taxpayers more than a million dollars, and counting. Well done everyone. 🙄

Strong column @amyremeikis.bsky.social Who will command the nuclear-powered subs when (if) they arrive is too narrow a focus. If govt can't speak out NOW for fear of the US scuttling the deal, how has that limited Australia's sovereignty in the here and now? www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/politic...

Antoinette Lattouf: “In December 2023 I shared a Human Rights Watch found that Israel was using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza. "It is now June 2025 and Palestinian children are still being starved. We see their images everyday: emaciated, skeletal, scavenging through the rubble.”

I hope the Lattouf decision gives other board members decision makers around the country serious pause in the future. Political opinions are still legal in this country. Facts and criticism about horrific human rights violations should be supported, not punished.

Among the dead are at least 27 people killed in an Israeli strike on civilians waiting for food in central Gaza, an attack that also wounded dozens and turned a relief site into what one Palestinian official called an “open field of death.”
