That would not even be my only run in with Van Morrison
comment in response to

I once ended up mentioned (but unnamed) in a local newspaper because I refused to let Van Morrison see an exhibit of Da Vinci sketches

theyre targeting a lot of groups, just pretending that this is about the two romanians who are already in custody

racists used it as an excuse to start carrying out attacks
thats literally the reason
comment in response to

to be clear, the rioters here are basically acting like ICE; targeting immigrant families in their homes and trying to scare ethnic minorities into leaving the country
they are the worst kinds of fascists

If this actually had anything to do with protesting sexual assault, every DUP office in the land would've been burned down after Donaldsons arrest, and there would've been 1600+ protests over the past year and a half

no, its racism.

the PSNI also just flat out told people to leave their homes rather than, yknow, trying to stop racists attacking said homes

Why would you trust the IDF, who have been caught lying multiple times, and who have a vested interest in denying this claim?

couple onto that the well documented infiltration of militaries by the far right (who share a lot of the same personalities), and you end up with a very dangerous threat to anyone they see as "other".... which now includes *you*
comment in response to
post
and thats not even STARTING on the personality types who join the military - individuals with aggressive tendencies to begin with, who are searching for an external compass to guide their actions, and generally have a belief in "might makes right" mentalities
comment in response to

then there is, of course, the powerful indoctrination that is key during military training, even at a basic level; the emphasis on following orders is literally a core aspect of "being a good soldier", and soldiers are conditioned to embrace the wider goals and direction of their superior officers

multiple studies find that "deindividuation" is a common side effect of wearing uniforms, as peoples own identities tend to get subsumed by their expectations of whatever uniform it is they are wearing
comment in response to
post
one variant of the classic Milgram experiment found that the very act of having a participant wear a police uniform increased the likelihood of them administering potentially lethal electric shocks to people when "following orders"*
*dont get me started on the Milgram experiment tho

it only helps when your opponent has a soul
cops have tactics to combat this; they literally just grab you, haul you off, ID you, and detain you
the best thing you can do at a protest is not get arrested - keep moving, have escape routes planned, and don't let the cops bottle you in

Like if they had, say, been rescuing refugees at sea? Or doing TV and radio interviews about the situation in Gaza the whole time?
Because that's literally what they did

Saline is a good option for eyes, but if you're talking about your whole body it's gonna be water most of the time.
If it's in your mouth milk would be fine, but across your body, milk leaves a residue that can trap capsaicin on your skin
comment in response to
post
I think in theory it'd be okay, but not a whole lot more efficient than using water, as water doesn't require refrigeration, doesn't leave a smell or residue, and is cheaper
comment in response to
post
In general you don't want anything apart from water near your eyes

No, it wasn't. Israel repeatedly fired upon and bombed civilians during the ceasefire, and ended it with a massive unannounced strike across the Strip *before* announcing the ceasefire was over
comment in response to
post
Also, cops can't offer deals... If a cop says you'll get a reduced sentence or even let off if you cooperate, they're talking shit. Get a deal on paper, signed by a judge, before you say shit

There already WAS an agreement to release the hostages
Then Israel refused to abide by the terms, repeatedly broke the ceasefire, tried changing the terms of the agreement, declared it was no longer good enough, and resumed bombing

There already *was* an agreement to release the hostages
Then Israel refused to let the agreed upon aid in, blocked agreed upon evacuations of people in need of medical treatment, repeatedly broke the ceasefire, tried changing the terms of the deal, then resumed bombing

Sounds like you're saying Israel should stop blocking external aid groups and journalists from entering Gaza
comment in response to

a negotiated release is the best option, with israel being held to the terms of the agreement by the international community
comment in response to
post
i disagree, israel would continue the fighting as it has listed the end of Hamas as a key demand for ceasefire agreements and even without hostages i believe they would continue their offensive to achieve that goal
comment in response to
post
"whats to stop it now?", the probability that the IDF would continue their attacks and blockades even without hostages as a goal.... theyd just say "we're gonna make sure this doesnt happen again" and continue the occupation
comment in response to
post
because i dont trust the israeli government to stop murdering civilians
the israeli government has repeatedly broken agreements that would have released hostages, committed war crimes, killed journalists, and so on, i have no faith in them stopping their attacks once the hostages are all released
comment in response to
post
but lets say they did release all hostages tomorrow, without an agreement
... whats to stop the IDF declaring their objective to be the destruction of Hamas and continuing their war? and once thats done whats to stop them staying to "allow a peaceful transition of power"? ....nothing.
comment in response to
post
there already was an agreed upon stage 2 which would have seen the release of all remaining living hostages.... then Israel and the US tried changing the terms of the agreement
Israel also constantly broke the ceasefire agreement while it was in action
comment in response to
post
there was a multi stage release plan in 2025 that saw the release of 30 hostages, and a ceasefire agreement in 2023 that saw the release of over 100. both were negotiated ceasefire deals, and both were first broken by the IDF
comment in response to
post
there was, in January. multiple hostages were exchanged. Israel then broke the ceasefire in March with a series of surprise attacks *before* they announced they were resuming full military actions
