Mastodon isn't perfect. But the fact a social network exists that is completely free to use, has no venture capital investors, has no shareholders to answer to, has no growth targets, with a web interface with zero cookies, and mobile apps with zero trackers at all with ten thousand […]

People will be more inclined to join federated social media when they can tell individual servers apart as easily as the two competing coffeeshops down the street. Right now, Mastodon and Pixelfed (etc) servers are more about the protocol, and less about the community. But that might change.

Hey don't forget! This Saturday we're gonna be eating chocolate and visiting some disaster-struck bookstores in San Francisco *and* Oakland. It's an all ages, free, super chill time (but please buy books!) Deets/RSVP: www.eventbrite.com/e/emergency-...

Unbelievable. 💔 This morning’s sunrise over Los Angeles.

For those who've been following the story of John Williams, the mole inside the militia movement, he's now released a significant portion of his files through @ddosecrets.com: ddosecrets.com/article/para...

What are you looking forward to in 2025? Personally, I'm waiting for Book 4 of the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir, seeing the results of a little bit of guerilla wildflower planting on the side of the highway near my house, and working towards product/market fit for the software I'm building.

LLM's are only as smart as the people who use them to do their jobs.

Just reupping this for the Sunday crowd. Please spread the word. These are three wonderful bookstores that really, really need your support right now. <3

Amazon workers on strike Black Friday through Cyber Monday! Don’t cross picket line! The deals aren’t worth it. Shop small, support local.

Okay, gang. Are we ready for a little Bluesky #PlantsGiving action? A social media tradition since 2018: counting & reporting out the number of plant species consumed during your Thursday dinner. I've got a class doing it for homework. Excited to see what they share. #iamabotanist #bisonflowers

Spurred by this post about domains and verification on BlueSky, I'm going to see about creating multiple handles to represent each of the different "selves" I have a domain for. Seems a little bit easier than setting up a mastodon instance for each domain.

All the different scientist starter packs (and bloviator block packs) are making the bluesky experience really nice. It would be nice if I could turn the starter pack into a feed instead of following everyone.

Here I am, for my weekly Bluesky post.

I have a piece in The NYT this morning. When a Minneapolis suburb hired a Black chief and assistant chief, over half the department quit. Yet the world didn’t end. When cops would rather quit than respect the wishes of the communities they serve, maybe it’s okay to let them go.

Day 2 checking out BlueSky. Firehose is not that interesting, but has posts, unlike What's Hot. Found a couple of people I follow elsewhere, due to boosts of their hot takes. There does not seem to be a natural way to find interesting people or topics, or "News".

It's not part of the default user experience, but here's a "latest" feed that someone made
