And who funded this work…? NSF funded all the US Antarctic ice cores (💚🩵) & NOAA funds Mauna Loa (🖤). Antarctic ice is the only archive clean enough to preserve unaltered air in bubbles in the ice.

For those fighting back. "Come, come, whoever you are... Ours is not a caravan of despair." -Rumi (13th century)

Another day, another barrage of news about how AI developers are getting billions of dollars for vaporware while NSF, NOAA and NASA are defunded.

today’s poetry morsel, from The Paris Review, ISSUE 251, SPRING 2025 The War Is Over by Nasser Rabah, translated by Wiam El-Tamami excerpt from verse 9. The war is over. The birds, who have seen everything, everything, go on singing.

You are here. We've breached 430 ppm CO2. #climatechange

There's only one reason for Trump's massive deletion and closing of national climate, weather, ocean, & environmental data sets: to silence and turn a blind eye to evidence of major threats in order to protect the fossil-fuel industry. This is modern book burning. www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume...

Wait till they find out that these people also vote.

This is, weirdly, the most purely fascist shit anyone in the administration has said so far - Your health is an asset of the fatherland - Illness is a failure or a moral failing - You have a duty to maintain your health - Healthcare is not a right, it's a finite resource - Die for the fatherland

NOAA just announced a long list of datasets that are going away🧪⚒️🌊: www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume... Download what you need asap and send comments to: [email protected]

Online NOAA climate data hubs serving 27 states — from Colorado and the Dakotas to Louisiana and Texas — have gone dark after a lapse in funding. The cause: expired contracts. This is becoming a pattern at NOAA 🧵 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

“The old American order is dead. It ended on April 14, 2025, when a Latin American strongman sat in the Oval Office and discussed sending U.S. citizens to foreign concentration camps with the American president while they jointly defied the Supreme Court.” @jvl.bsky.social

Our rising seas. This is only going to get harder to ignore. This NASA visualization was created by svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5520/

"The United States has ignited a geopolitical showdown with China. In this 12 min. video, Professor Kishore Mahbubani describes how China is both prepared, and strategically equipped, to counter America’s moves." (/ht @gpfriend.bsky.social ) youtu.be/Q4COv3rcvJg?...

Once again, one thing that I was very wrong about, since 2015, was my assumption that there was some baseline level of personal & professional pride that would keep journalists at the Paper of Record from so thoroughly debasing themselves in the face of fascism. My apologies. It won’t happen again.

People need to understand that, in mainstream Western institutions, “good economics” does not mean what’s best for meeting the needs of working people, but what’s best for ensuring capital accumulation and imperial hegemony. That’s it.

a friend sent me this one

“these men have no concept of danger” — snap!

It’s so weird how we’re all just working like this is still a normal country.

W. E. B. DuBois: “We shall never have a science of history until we have in our colleges men who regard the truth as more important than the defense of the white race.”

She died in binary. That’s dedication. RIP.

I have been hearing from people that they have been having issues accessing their Social Security accounts. INSTEAD of going to a branch which may be hundreds or 1Ks+ of miles away from you, call your members of Congress. They have constituent services that will help you regain access. Please share!

One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

thinking of one of abraham lincoln's great quotes this morning: "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy."

this is great and gets to what might be the defining attribute of this administration which is that trump himself is barely aware of what is happening

When oligarchs talk of “personal liberties and free markets” they mean their own liberties to become even richer and more powerful. When oligarchs speak of “freedom,” what they actually seek is freedom from accountability. Know the truth.

Cool cool. @durbin.senate.gov, @amyklobuchar.com @klobuchar.senate.gov @whitehouse.senate.gov are looking to team up with MAGA to give Donald Trump the power to censor anything he wants on the Internet. Do they not recognize what will happen?

Man this would be a great premise for a Call of Cthulhu campaign

You get what you vote for.

Explain to me like I'm a child how the President of the United States can use Executive Orders to abolish a governmental Department established by Congress. Cite your sources and show your work.

I lived in the first century of world wars. Most mornings I would be more or less insane The newspapers would arrive with their careless stories – Slowly I would get to pen and paper, Make my poems for others unseen and unborn. -Muriel Rukeyser #everynightapoem [Carel Willink, Bad Tidings, 1932]

The trick is the "us" in her sentence does not mean "everyone." It means the people whose assets will be stranded & whose "living standards," which is to say "lifestyle," will be curtailed if *we* (those who want our kids to live) actually win power and transform our systems and halt global heating.

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

hey that's fascism
