The government will lay the legislation before parliament today to bring in the 6.7% increase in the National Living Wage announced in the budget. The move will see over 3 million of the lowest people get a pay rise from April.

As I keep saying, we need to make @bsky.app the biggest social media platform on the planet, we need to do it with urgency & we need to send Elon Musk packing The number of BlueSky users tonight stands at 29,477,992. WE CAN DO THIS!

Must speak truth to power. Is Mariann Edgar Budde the person of the year for standing up to Trump? There is nothing more patriotic than social justice; protection of the vulnerable; eradication of poverty, hate; giving visibility to what is ignored/marginalized. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

10,000 of 3,000,000 millionaires left the country last year - 0.33%. These people would rather leave than pay tax - good riddance I say. Let’s not change our approach to appease rich freeloaders.

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Totally agree with this. … We need to do things differently,” he said.

Why is our taxpayer's money going to the Royals in so many ways? Empty Dartmoor prison pays Prince William’s Duchy £1.5m a year & has another 24 years left on its lease Charities which the Royals are patrons of also pay millions to them in rent Make it make sense www.thetimes.com/article/ddf3...

Reform UK voters cannot see the hypocrisy.

Is... is Liz Truss cosplaying as Paddington?

Donald Tusk: "I am aware this is a dream: that instead of a #Brexit, we will have a #Breturn. Perhaps I am labouring under an illusion. But I'd rather be an optimist and harbour these dreams in my heart. Sometimes they come true in politics." ~AA

Some of my fellow Brighton to London commuters seem too ill to be travelling into work. Either they have terrible employers or they have forgotten all the “keep your germs to yourself” COVID stuff. Or maybe it’s both.

🔴'Keir Starmer’s Transformational Political Project is Being Grossly Underestimated’ The relentless criticism of the Labour Government from a hostile media is completely at odds with its record and the historical context, argues Professor Chris Painter bylinetimes.com/2025/01/09/k...

A v clear-sighted analysis of where we are now. And Trump hasn’t even started yet. 👇

Appropriate mix of headlines. Climate change accelerates, while the business world, under pressure from US conservatives, abandons any attempt to stop it

Have written about Starmer's speech- his best moment yet as PM. He implicitly identified what sits at the heart of this story: the emergence of a common UK/US online right, headed by the radicalised Musk. It is making extremist, until recently fringe politics mainstream in British conservatism.

Happy Sunday!

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections @appgfairelections.bsky.social recommendations: 1) Establish a National Commission on Electoral Reform. 2) Close donation loopholes and strengthen the Electoral Commission. 3) Require transparency in handling of 'legal but harmful' content. 👍

Musk is attacking UK democracy, and we need a proper response. So let’s get this petition going viral, and force a grownup course of action at the highest level. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... Want to do even more? Join MVTFWD.com - because coordinating our votes is true leverage.

Successive governments have failed on social care. It’s not a shortage of good ideas that’s the problem, but a shortage of good politics. Today that changes with Louise Casey. Britain has a social care crisis. Here’s how we’ll work together to fix it 👇🏻 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Received “The Girls who Disappeared” by Claire Douglas as a secret Santa. Read it v quickly and really enjoyed the plot. #BookSky

It’s official. Pubs are safe. Fireworks are a waste of money. And my little dog hates them!

I had the huge privilege of interviewing Jimmy Carter back in 2011 at his incredibly modest home in Plains, Georgia, with his wife, Rosalynn (who he bickered with in the most loving & curious way throughout the interview). An extraordinary man & legacy. RIP. www.theguardian.com/world/2011/s...

A decent man, making a distinguished exit just before the arrival of the least decent and distinguished president in history. #JimmyCarter RIP www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

Just finished The Map of Bones by Kate Mosse. Such amazing storytelling. Sad it’s the last of the series. #booksky

The woes of the govt are overdone. Their biggest problem is a consistent tendency to favour tactics over strategy. And failing to change the law to protect British democracy from Musk's money, is the worst example of this yet. My piece for the i. inews.co.uk/opinion/dona...
