Harvard’s putting up a fight from the academic sector. Where are our business leaders?? The silence is deafening. The latest No Mercy / No Malice: www.profgalloway.com/breaking-the...

🧪 “Science serves society best when its integrity is protected from political influence.” It’s a welcome development for the American Psychological Association (APA) starting to speak up, now after 1,000+ terminated NSF grants 👏 updates.apaservices.org/statement-on...

Read this headline. It is truly something I would have never expected to see in my life. www.science.org/content/arti...

The conservative movement has turned against reality on every scientific issue of our time, from gun violence to climate change to epidemiology. If campuses are ideologically homogenous, it's not because academia has ostracized conservatives. It's because conservatives have ostracized academia.

Indiana University has served the young people of the state and the country and the world as a model public university. These measures, passed without review or discussion, destroy IU’s independence and will if allowed to stand undo its essential character. (1/3) www.axios.com/local/indian...

A grandma who works at Target. An advocate for farmworkers. A cancer researcher. A grad student who wrote an op-ed. A hairdresser. A sheet metal worker and loving father to an autistic child. At least two people who took a wrong turn on the same bridge in Detroit. A toddler.

Last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined. wapo.st/4luJyph

Just to be clear, we reached the arresting-judges-and-deporting-US-citizens-without-due-process stage of the slide into authoritarianism today. And the citizens in question included a toddler and a child with cancer who needs treatment in the US.

They are taking away our vaccines. Jay Bhattacharya is talking about eliminating mRNA vaccines. Meanwhile, RFK Jr. has managed to ratfuck the Novavax approval process.

This has never been about efficiency. The NIH is a remarkably efficient organization. No, this has all been about destroying our investment in science and academia.

Meanwhile…

When the moment came, Harvard didn’t hedge or flinch—it stood up. A reminder that integrity isn’t complicated, it’s just rare.

So with the decimation of science funding (ie science education), who does the administration think American tech companies are gonna be hiring? (not unique to tech obvs)

President Trump has personally ordered the Justice Department to open an investigation of Democrats' primary ways for raising donations. It is the third time he has personally ordered an open-ended criminal investigation, each against a perceived political foe. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...

University of Michigan Regents come out squarely and publicly in defense of academic freedom against political coercion and the role of higher education and research in making America prosperous, secure ... and well ... maybe even Great? www.michigandaily.com/opinion/op-e...

So glad the free speech absolutists are in charge.

Alternative medicine isn’t just a mishmash of unsupported and pseudoscientific approaches, but an organized and identifiable ideology. It’s a body of longstanding recurring ideas about health that continue to ooze through our culture and that are commercialized and sold to us as wellness.

For the better part of a century, the US has been enormously enriched by emigrant scientists from around the world. Under Trump, the brain drain is reversing. If you like long-format radio, I had a great conversation with @nvpatel.bsky.social (NYtimes) and Libby Denkmann (KUOW) this morning.

Lukashenko is set to falsify his seventh “victory,” a tired ritual in his decaying dictatorship — ever the obedient sycophant of the tsar in Moscow.

Research by @chenoweth.bsky.social et al, shows that when 3.5% of a population rises in opposition, change happens. TWELVE MILLION IN THE STREETS. That’s the 🎯.

1. The DOJ has sent threatening letters to several medical journals, focused around whether these journals are spreading misinformation that harms the American people and suppressing alternative viewpoints. I study how the norms and institutions of science facilitate discovery and self-correction.

🧪 DOGE is reporting cancelling 402 NSF grants today. And let's recap: this is for awards that NSF has **ALREADY** judged as aligned with its mission in law, which includes broadening participation in STEM. It bears repeating: the law supersedes exec orders. For more: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

Meanwhile, DOJ lawyers are threatening medical journals for not providing adequate "viewpoint diversity" and for misinforming their readership, which I suppose means not publishing enough of the stupid shit that RFK Jr., JB, etc. keep saying. This is an outrageous First Amendment violation.

Registration is now open for the annual conferences of the Society for Mathematical Psychology. This summer, mathpsych.org will host a virtual conference (June 16-20) and Ohio State University will host an in-person conference (July 25-29).

This is so important. A federal grant is a contract to carry out work that the government does not have the capacity to do. If university grants are "entitlements", then so are the NASA and DOD contracts to Boeing and SpaceX

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

When you stack your administration with incompetent sycophants, you can push things for a while. They’ll threaten your enemies and make all sorts of mischief. But when shit goes down, it’ll go down fast. They’ll fall all at once like a house of cards because loyalty to a crook is all they got.

"It’s time for Americans in universities, law, business, nonprofits and the scientific community, and civil servants and beyond to form one coordinated mass movement. Trump is about power" From David Brooks www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/o...

As someone who is chronically ill, who has been disabled since the age of 4, and who has both mental and physical disabilities... I can not remember a time that I was not aware of the hot breath of danger on the back of my neck if I did not cling to the clifftops of "nominal function".

qwhite unsurprising

📣TAKE ACTION!🚨 We’re calling on universities to stand up for academic freedom. Harvard just said NO to federal overreach, and we’re asking others to do the same. Sign our open letter, and join the movement to defend the future of science and higher ed: sciforgood.org/support-acad...

"Within minutes after DOGE accessed the NLRB's systems, someone with an IP address in Russia started trying to log in ... Whoever was attempting to log in was using one of the newly created DOGE accounts — and the person had the correct username and password"

This is what political violence looks like. @governor.pa.gov is a father and husband whose family was nearly burned alive hours after hosting Passover Seder. Many who claim to care about antisemitism are awfully silent now. If you can't condemn this, you're part of the problem.

FEMA denied Washington's request for emergency relief funds to help repair damage from recent devastating storms. There are very clear criteria to qualify for these funds. Washington’s application met all of them. This is another troubling example of the federal government withholding funding.

aside: a stunning comment from David Baker, UW professor who won the Nobel Prize in 2024. Now 15 lab members are looking for positions overseas. “There’s so many amazing people who want to come in, & we can’t take them. The Nobel Prize was just a little blip. But things have gotten quite bleak.”

0. Vought, Vance, Rufo, and those attacking academia see scientists as bureaucrats—in the most pejorative sense of the term—who they can "put into trauma" and drive to quit. They don't understand that science is not just a job. It's a vocation, literally, in the original sense of *a calling*.

I reported on economics full-time in 2020. It taught me there are no incentives to have a baby in the US. Women in the US have to pay for pre-natal, medical and child care, earn less, do most of the parenting and chores, get promoted less, and are now at 27% higher risk of maternal mortality.
