The impact of academic research is not always immediate or easy to measure, especially beyond its theoretical contributions, as it can take years to materialize. After 12 years of research & partnerships in the Territory of Good, I received yet another piece of news that filled my heart with joy:

This is a bold and globally pioneering initiative from the Senedd. A complex and often legally technical challenge. There's still a long way to go, but cross-partisan support and a genuine focus on rebuilding trust in public life has won through. Quick thread... www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Estimates, with good data, that "almost two million potential voters" lack the new voter ID and in 2024 "over half a million people... were unable to vote due to the new legislation." The demographic patterns are depressingly predictable, too.

The article: "The online search giant is known for using experimental tests as a tactic during negotiations over content moderation."

If the UK's decision here is aimed at creating a less regulated national context for AI—to attract inward investment—this is short sighted. Weak stance on AI-related harms and weak regulation will undermine public trust in the tech in the long term. Nobody wins. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

An absolutely scorching OpEd by Harold Varmus, Nobel laureate, on Trump's destruction of the vaunted US scientific & biomedical enterprise & on Trump's kooky picks to lead the US health & science agencies Gift link to share far & wide www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

Finally got my hands on @meredithdclark.bsky.social 's newest baby “We Tried to Tell Y’all: Black Twitter and the Rise of Digital Counternarratives” Thank you for telling the REAL story of Black Twitter & for always including my own contributions. Go get a copy!

The passive authoritarian tense

Regulation versus innovation is a false choice set. That’s the post. [And I am repeating it every 4 hours all day] ♾️♾️♾️♾️

Yeah, I totally forgot about #MWE with all that's happening in our country, so I am going to do my best to catch up with the crowd and get back to listening to new-to-me albums for you all. We'll see if I can do two albums a day to get caught up...

A Berlin court ruled in favour of two German nonprofits, who sued X for breaching EU law by not giving them access to data to study how posts on the platform could influence the upcoming election.

Excellent investigation into the Nazi content proliferating on Meta’s platforms over the last month ⤵️ While online hate was already flourishing, Meta’s policy changes have removed the guardrails.

Oh yeah we have 31M users now That happened rather quick, huh... Hamsters running at full velocity to keep things online, in the process of spinning up more hamster wheels and recruiting more hamsters. Line goes up.

Elon Musk has shared this fake E! News video on X, which claims USAID has paid millions to Hollywood celebrities to visit Ukraine. The clip, now community noted, is the work of a well-known Russian disinformation campaign that creates fake videos of news outlets to push anti-Ukrainian narratives.

New short article with Sarah Banet-Weiser, about the digital mirror-world, and how it is populated by strange doppelgangers of feminism 'Through the looking glass: feminism and reactionary politics in the digital hall of mirrors' journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

So much for checks and balances and the separation of powers. Grim.

Highly recommend this. Reveals aspects to Nick Cave that I wasn't aware of. As usual, Lauren Laverne is brilliant at granting permission to open up emotionally without it becoming mawkish. Cracking tunes as well. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Recent EOs signal a lot, among them the attack on civil rights systems, and the weaponizing of DEI to reshape govt. My co-authors @meredithdclark.bsky.social & I have long contemplated this outcome in a project published today in @polcommjournal.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10....

It is hard to under-estimate the extent to which contemporary reactionary politics seems to rely on and relish performative nastiness (see also Robert Jenrick insisting on painting over murals at an immigration facility for children in the U.K.).

Thriving university spinouts must not be an Oxbridge preserve @lborouniversity.bsky.social VC and leaders from other world-class member universities of @midlandsinnovation.bsky.social share their concerns about the Oxbridge growth corridor via @financialtimes.com www.ft.com/content/c92a...

Trump blaming last night's tragic crash on "DEI" isn't just racist nonsense. It’s part of his divide and conquer strategy. He wants to get us so riled up against one another that we don’t look upward and see where all the power and wealth have gone.

Good @makenakelly.bsky.social piece on how the early Trump administration is like a big influencer hype house. "They’re not just leading the government, they’re making content while doing it" www.wired.com/story/trump-...

Begging the political press to stop just reporting on what Trump says he's done, and actually investigating what has *actually* happened. The focus on rushing out stories to be first is letting the MAGA world play you over and over and over again.

The amazing Meredith Clark! Check out her book and its review in the New York Times!! @meredithdclark.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/b...

'Musk’s focus on fending off regulation has both economic and political motives.' Prof @andrewchadwick.com @lborouniversity.bsky.social talks to @julianborger.bsky.social @theguardian.com about Elon Musk's interest in the UK. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

I spoke to @theguardian.com's @julianborger.bsky.social about the important context that is often neglected in the reporting on Musk, X, and Trump: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
