For #AncientSiteSunday a photo of the protection of the Sphinx at Giza against bombs during World War II. Sandbags were piled on a structure of stones and bricks, carefully placed around the statue's chin to protect the neck against breakage. Photo: Bob Landry 🏺 #AncientEgyptBluesky

I just have to post this #iceage masterpiece from time to time: A tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figurine of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. Found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura, south-west Germany. 📷 by me #archaeology 🏺

Happy Year of the Snake! 🐍 Antiquity's fascination with snakes arises from myths and religious practices. In Egypt, they symbolized power and protection. In Greece, they were sacred to Asclepius and wrapped around his staff. Romans saw them as symbols of renewal and immortality.

Pottery vessel with amber beads found at Sortekærs Mose in Denmark. Amber was collected throughout Neolithic with the largest amounts found in Jutland. In the Early Neolithic period there were the biggest finds, often deposited as sacrifices in lakes and bogs. #FindsFriday

We all need a timeline cleanse right now... An adorable #Greek rhyton in the shape of a cow's head. Vessels such as this one were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, the content had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down Dating ca. 460 BC 📷Metropolitan Museum 🏺

Models of everyday life were deposited in #Egyptian tombs. They were supposed to support the deceased in the afterlife. One of the most charming examples is the model of a #cow giving birth. Carved in wood, painted. Probably from Meir, #Egypt, dating c. 2040-1985 BC 📷 @romtoronto.bsky.social 🏺

Marble sculpture of the Glycon snake, guardian of Tomis/Constanța, 2nd century AD. Part of a hoard of sculptures found near the city wall, probably hidden to save them from Christian iconoclasm. Museum Constanța, Romania. #archaeology

#AncientSiteSunday; the Stadium of Domitian in #Rome. The building was dedicated in 86 CE during the reign of Domitian. The post-antique buildings around Piazza Navona were constructed on the remains of the stadium, which gives the piazza its shape. #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientBlueSky

Wow, a rare example of a Neolithic axe with its original ash wood handle still preserved! Resembling a modern felling axe, it was probably used to clear forest some 5,200 years ago. From Borum, eastern Jutland, Denmark. Moesgaard Museum. 📷 by me #Archaeology

Objects decorated with garnet cloisonné were popular in the 5th and 6th century. However, they experienced a general decline at the end of the 6th century. During that time, an accumulation of cloisonné jewellery with empty cells appeared, such as this fibula (a pin for...🧵1/2 📷 me 🏺#archaeology

In September I took this photo of the Carafa Chapel in Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, with late 15th-century frescoes (1488–1493) by Filippino Lippi. The church was built directly over (‘sopra’ in Italian) of a temple dedicated to Isis, not Minerva. #FrescoFriday #skystorians #art

Gisele Pelicot es la persona del año. Que señora tan valiente.

✨It rarely gets the centre of attention because of the lantern tower but the 12th Romanesque nave at Ely Cathedral is jaw-dropping - so I put my tilt-shift lens to use..📸

The Shambles, York last night looking rather Christmassy!

Children loved to play with toys in #Roman times too: some 1,800 years ago, a child in Cologne was buried with a terracotta with a rider on wheels. It was certainly a much-loved which the child was also supposed to play with in the afterlife. 📷 Römisch-Germanisches Museum Köln 🏺 AncientBluesky

Centuries ago, many astronomical books included moving parts to help readers interpret the world around them. This biscuit recreates a diagram from Sacrobosco’s ‘De Sphaera’ (c.1550). It could be used to calculate the changing length of daylight hours through the year. 🍪
