Same here. I understand why they want the tax process to be terrible and error-prone, but why is TurboTax itself so bad? It's full of bugs that any self-respecting software vendor would be embarrassed to put out in public.

If he goes there and sees a big stack of gold bars, how does he have any idea whether or not that's the right number?

The fact that we don't have net neutrality (except for some state-level regulations) means that it would be perfectly legal for Internet providers to throttle any disfavored service to the point of unusability.
