#NowPlaying Memphis plays Liverpool

Still on a bit of a Pulp high from the other night.

This feels like a very Father's Day sort of record. I picked it up yesterday and while it's excellent, it's also probably all the Cream I need.

For a couple of hours tonight it felt like the troubles of the world were a million miles away. Thanks Pulp, you were magnificent

Garden reading. Jonathan Eig is a magnificent writer, able to capture the enormity, and glitz of Ali whilst also weaving his story into a vivid depiction of the turmoil of America in the 60s and 70s. An enthralling book

One good Friday morning I nearly ran future Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie over with my Royal Mail bike

Friday morning music part three. This record contains some of the loveliest, spiritual music in George's back catalogue. It also contains some of his finest moaning about how hard it is to be rich when everyone is after your money. The Ying and Yang of George Harrison.

Tonight's viewing...Saoirse Ronan is magnificent in this.

12 June 1929 | A German Jewish girl, Anne Frank, was born in Frankfurt. In 1942 on her 13th birthday she received an empty diary. She perished in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. 'Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character & goodness.' (A.Frank)

This might be the absolute greatest reply we have ever received. Thank you, Cookie Monster πŸ“•πŸͺπŸ’™

Directions to Brian's house (if you know where to start)

RIP big dog

Flawless

In my teens I thought that The Beach Boys were a bunch of old guys in candy striped shirts singing about surfing, then I heard God Only Knows, Surfs Up & Heroes & Villains & I realised that these are works of genius. Then it dawned on me that so were the ones about surfing and girls. RIP Brian

This just came up on a playlist and it managed to stop me in my tracks as it always does.

It's a 'Gregory's Girl' type evening outside.

As a teenager I had a VHS tape of Woodstock that I'd taped from the telly. Of all the performances it was this one that I kept coming back to. There was something completely gripping about it, I watched it so often that I honestly believe that it changed my musical DNA. RIP Sly and thank you

My latest monthly playlist is now up on Spotify. A selection of music that spans genres, decades and continents. Every month I wonder if I'll hear enough to make a nicely varied playlist and every month I'm amazed by what's out there.

Tonight's viewing

I was listening to Purple Rain for the first time in ages yesterday & this leapt out at me. I don't think I've ever heard a track before where the artist is so convinced of his destiny & so confident that his abilities will get him there. Even more amazingly everything he boasted about came to pass.

Sunday morning music part five. If you put tracks from this on a playlist of Pulp songs from His n Hers onwards I think a lot of people would be hard pressed to say which are the new ones. Saying that It's not a nostalgic record, it feels like the next chapter in a great novel.
