"as we build new social media, we need to keep in mind lessons learned from activist efforts to make corporate social media better" - @mallory.techpolicy.social.ap.brid.gy , at #rightscon panel on new social web. Fixing big platforms + alternatives is two pronged strategy for #digitalpublicspace

I'm at #RightsCon this week to talk about the importance of independent social networks, data sovereignty, and more.

Flying to Taipei 🇹🇼 this evening for #RightsCon next week, where I’ll be on a panel “How we build a new social web” at 9am on Tuesday. I’ll also be speaking at the #RubyJam meetup on Tuesday evening, about Ruby and the #Fediverse. My first visit to Taiwan - any tips?

This FediWall from @andypiper.me is brilliant if you want to follow #SOOCon25 andyp.url.lol/soocon25 #SOOCon macaw.social/@andypiper/1...

Today is #FOSDEM travel day - just about to close up the suitcase and head towards St Pancras. I have plenty of stickers to share! Looking forward to seeing friends from across the #OpenSource community in Brussels.

The Fediverse - the network of decentralised social network apps - has grown almost 40% over the last few weeks in terms of active users (almost all of which are new user accounts), and the increase currently shows no sign of slowing down.

Tentatively planning / toying with the idea of a personal podcast. I already do @gamesatwork_biz but I'm thinking of a space to talk more about things i'm observing in tech and society. Mind you, also aware that I sometimes struggle to maintain a blog. Yay / nay / wth are you thinking / do it […]

We could all do with more music from independent artists in our lives, so I wrote about how I'm trying to help with that, in my own small way. #Fediverse #TheIndieBeat #Bandwagon #Linux

Something to look forward to in January? How about the HackWimbledon/Code for February with talks on Python and data science and nailing webhooks into small things. Sunday Feb 9 - https://lu.ma/k83zhbg7 - sign up and see you there!

Re-evaluating where I am online Thinking about Meta platforms, and more - here's where I spend the majority of my social time and effort, online.

@kellypuffs.bsky.social what are you doing here?

in case you missed it, telling the nazis to fuck off starts with you getting off substack

Enjoy music from the #fediverse right on your #GNOME desktop via artists on The Indie Beat @indiebeat and Bandwagon @service ... blog post and video coming, but here's a little GNOME Shell extension I made. 🤘🏻 https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/7822/the-indie-beat-fediverse-radio/

When I chose Jan 20th for the release of my album there was no particular significance. Now it comes to it, the title Happy New Dystopia! feels more appropriate than I'd imagined. It's out now and available for just £1 xylander.bandcamp.com/album/happy-... #ElectronicMusic #IDM #Electronica

Also, since folks are checking out Pixelfed right now, I’m @[email protected] over there.

I post a lot more frequently on Mastodon, btw, so if you want to know more about what I’m up to, you can follow my bridged account -> @andypiper.macaw.social.ap.brid.gy

Taking this afternoon for myself - a visit to Electric Dreams at Tate Modern to explore some digital and computer art, then the Annual Jasia Reichardt Lecture: Icône 2020 – in honour of Vera Molnár at BCS. #art #generativeArt #penplotterart #culture

Don't you dare turn your eyes away from history, even the awful, scary parts. If you don't watch it with your own eyes, you rely on others to tell you what you saw. We must all bear witness to what's coming.

If you too like talking far too much about the Fediverse, try #techgrumps which also covers further diverse topics, including app based dumpster diving.

Today's Lobsters Office Hours stream is 50 minutes from now. There's plenty more Rails 8 PRs, some small updates for the UK OSA's threats to forums, and then to relax from that big project I will hilariously misuse CSS to implement a feature. push.cx/stream

Jeff Atwood steps up to be a thing that’s sorely needed in tech right now: a leader. He actually *gives* half of his current net worth (not a pledge — he already cut checks) to 8 organizations helping the most vulnerable. blog.codinghorror.com/stay-gold-am... An inspiring move, when it most matters.

Has anyone who ha[s|d] a Polywork account had a response to a request for the data export before it closes down? Still waiting on that a week later…

At the start of December I delivered a keynote on the social web, Mastodon, and Ruby, at RubyWorld in Japan - here is my post about the trip and the talk (includes a long transcript).
