The whole point of this style is to provide depth of field and dynamic visuals to achieve clear hierarchy and WCAG contrast standards.

This overlay looks like shit. I would never show anyone this draft let alone ship it to great fanfare.
The background isn’t opaque enough to give the foreground sufficient contrast and hierarchy.
It muddies the selected state background and definitely fails WCAG contrast standards.
