I want my daughter’s entry into adulthood to occur in a time of peace and prosperity…. Not the fucking dark ages. That hope keeps me going even though things are looking a little bleak lately.

I love this windy, obstinate city to my core. It took 15 years to acclimatise to its rugged beauty. It’s lack of a real summer. I’m from the sunny Bay of Plenty after all. Its beaches aren’t sandy and soft. It’s a city but also far too small and intimate to be a city. Wellington defies conventions.

It’s Waitangi Day here in Aotearoa New Zealand. A day of conflicting emotions. So I’ve headed to the beach as many kiwis do. It’s the middle of summer, everyone is enjoying a day off mid week. Many try to put out of their minds the brutal history of colonisation here. So I sit here on stolen land.

Stress levels are high while I’m selling my apartment in awful economic times here in the capital. So today I went and sat under a tree for awhile and remembered how small my troubles are in the grand scheme of things.
