Haymarket Books for Fighting Fascism

LET'S GOOOOOOO STUDENTS!!

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

another great example along with Wired and Teen Vogue of how real journalism these days can be a lot braver at outlets where no one is trying to get in good with the White House press secretary they’re out here with us, reporting on what’s happening to us all, instead of trying to get inside access

What in the absolute fuck is going on at the University of Cincinnati? For the record, trans men are just as biological as any other sort of man. They aren't made of metal or something.

I voted in an advance poll today for NDP incumbent @waterloompp.bsky.social, who has been a very good MPP. I don't usually disclose who I vote for, but this Ontario election is an inflection point. We suffer under an incompetent, corrupt government that is actively destroying public institutions.

Whoa. Pierre Poilievre started a press conference with a question from the truly trash True North, has taken a question from Rebel News...and between every question you can hear a someone yell in the background that he's not allowing all reporters to ask questions. He's ignoring them.

New Lancet study shows extremely low, 2%, recovery rate from Long COVID. However, those who considered their Long COVID resolved were still in worse health than those who never had Long COVID. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Reminder No. 4,678,245 that Doug Ford is a terrible Premier.

Don't risk missing out on your chance to vote because of more bad weather! Vote early at these advance polls and make your voice heard. #OnPoli

"How is it possible that so many people in power seem to have such stunted imaginations, so little curiosity for how to build this world to include more of us? I find this particularly repugnant when imagination and curiosity are some of the most defining traits of the very groups at risk."

MTA to Feds: Drop dead

I’ve learned so much from the people of Waterloo. In this election, please vote for proven leadership and community engagement. Send me back to Queen’s Park to work for you! #OnPoli youtu.be/MBVHKVeFU5c?...

Ontario is experiencing very strong Influenza A activity. A serious case of flu can put you in hospital, especially if you skipped vaccination or are in a vulnerable group. Over 23% of tests for influenza A are coming back positive. source: www.publichealthontario.ca/en/Data-and-...

Happy valentine's day to everyone who is actively resisting fascism. Fascists, fascist-supporters, and those complicit in fascism can fuck off into the sun.

RFK is about to be confirmed. If you haven’t, step out this afternoon and get a flu and covid shot.

🧵"So this is how liberty dies..." Trump’s first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up. I’ve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9

Get really familiar with this concept because that's what is happening right now. We will no longer have free and fair elections. Democracy is dead. It was murdered in broad daylight by a TV gameshow host and a ketamine addled afrikaaner man child.

For the evening crowd.

Remember that a mask does more than protect against covid. A well fitted respirator will also keep you safe from flu, measles, TB and other airborne viruses. It will keep those around you safe if you’re sick. It’s an easy way to demonstrate community care and solidarity.

And a hot tip that if you're someone who gets too anxious making phone calls, call in the evening or weekend and leave a voicemail! Personalized emails and handwritten letters are also really impactful. Form letters don't get the same response.

If you want a real concrete example of what this looks like, take this note my stalker slid under my door. If you don't know French, the translation is "I will always love you, you have no choice." Almost verbatim what Julia titled her research!

"[For the Right], D.E.I...is the mere presence of a woman or nonwhite person or disabled or transgender person in any high-skilled, high-status position. And their alternative isn’t some heretofore unknown standard of merit; it is the reintroduction of something like segregation." (gift link)

this is literally the entire budget for Medicaid btw. this is a literal death sentence for millions of people

A Phase 1 human trial will start this spring for a nasal vaccine for Covid-19: one that should be able to block transmission, which is huge. Great news (so long as the US still has the capacity to do science and generally function by then...).

📚Resisting Autocracy Lessons📚 DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given.

This whole thread - but also, and despite my own deep cynicism, I have still been surprised by all the powerful institutions complying in advance. My uni is striking all mentions of diversity. The last 18mos has shown admins are generally unwilling to stand for academic freedom with their faculty.

Our turn DC

A lot of Canadians don't realize that our country has long been very shitty to would-be immigrants who have disabilities and chronic conditions. It is getting better, at least -- the new thresholds should allow more people in, but there are still barriers.

Academic job campus visits are ableist AF. Arcane & nonsensical to ask that much of people in a short period of time. One time I was being escorted from one meeting to another. I asked to use the restroom & the person escorting me went into the stall beside me & continued to talk/ask me questions.

The gap between First Nations and non-First Nations life expectancy in Alberta is 19 years, and wider now than any other point on record. This is a provincial and national emergency. #ableg www.stalbertgazette.com/local-news/f...

This is one of several studies re covid-induced brain/cognitive damage among university students. If you are concerned & thinking ‘someone should do something’…we ned to look in the mirror b/c that someone is you, just as it is me. We cannot accept this. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

RIP to Donald Shoup, who fought a long battle to make America realize that "free parking" isn't free at all, and that car dependency is a trap. People are finally starting to come around. His work is featured in this 2016 piece by @clivethompson.bsky.social www.motherjones.com/environment/...

The problem with DEI is not that it went too far, but that it didn’t go far enough. My latest:

“Students are rightfully scared for their lives…. Danielle Smith’s legislation, although not yet fully enacted, has put a chill on discussions around sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.” #ableg #abpoli www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/arti...

All these attacks on scientific research means progress towards finding treatment that can improve many chronically ill people's quality of life is slowed down.

For the past 21 years the U.S. through PEPFAR has:  👉 Enabled 5.5 million babies to be born HIV-free 👉 Provided 20 million people with lifesaving HIV treatment 👉 Supported 7 million orphans and vulnerable children. Ending this support will end lives. #SaveHIVFunding www.unaids.org/en/topic/PEP...

Good for them. High school students showing more responsibility and ethical leadership than Smith has ever exercised.

Everyone read Flannery's Narwhal debut! The Ontario govt touts its pandemic investments in school air quality, but where's the data on how effective it's been? Is it protecting students from wildfire smoke, car exhaust and other respiratory threats?
