If the 2010s was the story was story of American tech eating the world, the 2020s has been a story about Chinese tech biting back, with cheaper, more popular products. AI was supposed to fix this, but America just lost there, as well. www.garbageday.email/p/the-ai-guy...

If you told me in 2024 that Medium will be one of the few last writing platforms where content moderation was still a thing (or at least it was written in their terms and services) I would laugh oh so hard. And yet, here we are!

The only fandom that is immensely proud that they don't read the original material is jujutsu kaisen. Really haven't seen people be so openly happy that they don't care about what's written in the manga. Coincidentally many don't like the ending of jjk. Which could mean nothing.

Hi. We’re Pop Heist. We exist because pop culture media is a hellscape. (We're doing something different.) 🧵 popheist.com

I gently explained in a local subreddit why using "unalive" outside the context of apps that actively censor/are belived to censor advertiser-unfriendly language is playing into the hands of advertisers santiziing the internet. FAR too many people agreed with me in a "yeah fuck slang" kind of way.

Meta's refusal to recognize that algorithmically driven content feeds are something people don't want will be their downfall and frankly I'm here for it. You can be a YouTube/TikTok style page delivering "CoNtEnT" or you can be a social media site where people connect, but you can't be both.

people of BlueSky, let's get to know each other better! what is your favorite movie? quote share your answer only in gif form

people are talking about how watching tv is like a job now, and yeah, I feel like that’s the point to an extent. executives want us working for them all the time, for our whole lives, and entertainment as duty is their ideal world realized in a slightly different way

I guess this is a thing that needs to be bragged about these days.

All the people who made bank off disparaging Amber Heard are terrible fucking people? Wow who could have seen that coming? Oh wait people were literally saying it before, during, and after the US trial because it was painfully obvious the ENTIRE TIME

"Oh my god look at this sick font! I'll upgrade to Spotify Pro right now!" said no one ever. www.theverge.com/2024/5/22/24...

lol who did this

When JK Rowling realized she would never be as good a children's author as Roald Dahl was she took a secret blood oath to defeat him at bigotry

Imagine if we judged the status quo by the same standards as we judged people who want it changed.

Kendrick obliterated Drake so hard they’re drawing fanart of him on Tumblr

New language for our publisher guidelines? "We don't knowingly sell titles that employ generative AI in any capacity. If we find out a particular title was created using AI, we reserve the right to remove AI-generated portions or delete the title from our offerings entirely." Opinions welcome

watching Twilight (Contrapoints's version)

i think another key part here is (and a lot of other social media companies are coming to this imo) apple owns the hardware. software is eating the world, but hardware is where it runs. apple managed to a chunk of hardware market. Not all but enough to do stuff like this.

I just stepped outside of my flat, the sky is blue. this is messed up it should be gray. are you seeing this too?

Lets get away from the numbers game for a moment. What did you write this week that made you proud as a writer? #writingcommunity

yes and exactly because "work" has an aesthetic attached to it creative people find it hard to call what they do "work". "I'm a writer, but i spend time thinking about my characters that's not work" - no it is!

We cannot even begin to discuss introducing AI into the workforce until we get rid of the concept that one must work to earn a living, that one must work to justify living. Replacing workers doesn't get them more free time, it gives them poverty and death.

seems like spotify web is down

building a content platform seems unethical at this point. even if i feel like i can make it better than others. the business model itself by definition feels exploitative. the only way to make a content platform work is to make it not for profit. and build some other business around it.

listen... i love garbage day, i used to pay for it. but these pieces by them get on my nerves. not every single place has to entertain you to death. www.garbageday.email/p/blueskys-b...

Save money this Valentine's Day by being unlovable

“Her brand of feminism has never felt inclusive, yet she’s been praised for empowering women.”

yes please! Please listen to your actual users and don't go into the "this is cool for tech people" pipeline so many open source projects go down to.

i had a review of "Good will hunting" underway but seems like i might table it for a smaller scale but still an important project about web 2 platforms!

good morning

the line goes down hehe

This sort of charade does serve a purpose, other than publicity, whether it means to or not: sustain the illusion of superfunctional AI for long enough to ensure everyone on the creative side of creative industries loses their job & can be rehired for peanuts on zero hours as a “content generator”

here's the script i use to turn my footnotes and references in Ghost from the shorthand i use while writing into the proper markup for publishing. may not work for you, since i use a very specific format, but could be a good starting point! github.com/molly/citati...

even AI's wages are cut in this economy techcrunch.com/2024/01/25/o...

Stop saying Ryan Gosling was the only one to be nominated for Barbie. Stop saying Greta was not nominated for anything. Both are untrue and it's really offensive to the cast & crew members who were nominated. Barbie received EIGHT nominations.
