Unsaid enough is that the universities, even/especially the liberal “elite” ones, are not creating an environment hostile to the current regime. Many of those people have degrees from those schools. They amassed great wealth and power to this point with those schools’ endorsement (and help!).

We're stronger together. The Trump administration will keep trying to attack international workers, and the best way to fight back is as a united, unbreakable front. Shout-out to the grads I work with in the Tufts Grad Worker Union who get this instinctually.

Meanwhile, across the pond. To translate for North American audiences: these are layoffs, including of faculty (UK faculty don't have tenure protections), sometimes in the hundreds.

Talked this morning with another higher ed organizer in the Boston area, who pointed to the importance of getting and staying more organized even as individual jabs from Trump et al. get temporarily blocked. This is a temporary relief, but more attacks will come. Call a coworker & get thinking.

Today I’m thinking about all the ways that universities do wrong by their international students. I’m thinking about offices that provide information about legal requirements without offering material and financial resources to help students meet those requirements. 1/

" ... nothing will feel like enough because everything we know and love is at stake. No individual’s actions will be commensurate with the threats we face. But we can each endeavor to do the next right thing, whatever that means for us."

Un-paywalled link, though there's not much info right now beyond the headline: archive.is/SnNBv. This is a five-alarm fire.

Last night, we were one of the first outlets to report the ADULT ban on gender affirming care for Medicaid recipients who depend on it to access it. This morning, that bill passed 215-214-1. It now goes to the senate. It's a bleak day for transgender Americans.

this is the president of the united states repeating unhinged racist propaganda ginned up by the worst white supremacist ideologues on earth

🚨According to litigators, ICE just put a dozen men on a flight (which may have already taken off) to SOUTH SUDAN, a country on the brink of civil war, in direct defiance of a court order requiring ICE to give people an opportunity to raise objections before being sent to a country not their own.

my favorite employers are those who say they want to settle a contract quickly but then refuse to put any money on the table jk jk excuse me while I dissolve into a puddle of goo

A principled student said in a grad speech that the “only appropriate thing to say in this moment” is to acknowledge the “atrocities” currently being committed in Palestine. In response, NYU is withholding their diploma + apologizing to the community for the trauma the audience was “subjected to.”

This is a disgusting statement and appalling choice by NYU to withhold this brave student's diploma for speaking up against the genocide in Palestine. Our institutions are farces.

Rümeysa's out. Badar's out. We keep going until everyone is free.

Come work with me! Local 509 is hiring a lead internal organizer on our Private Sector/Human Services team. Perfect for someone with organizing experience who cares a lot about mental health and similar areas. Salary starts at $92.8k. Deets: www.seiu509.org/jobs/lead-in...

This was my favorite book last year. It made me gasp out loud. Read it!

People are grumbling about Hasan Piker talking to the cops—and, yes, you should not talk to the cops! It can be hard to make that choice in the moment when a cop's in your face. So make it now and practice saying you want a lawyer. Preparation will help you protect yourself.

Just saying, it's never good when I have déjà vu from my 3 years of living in the UK.

I have been so proud to organize with these grads, who have insisted at every step on following Rümeysa's lead and advocating for those still incarcerated and suffering. We're not done until everyone is free.

BREAKING: Rümeysa, our union sister who was snatched by ICE, is free today. We stood up for our union family and demanded justice! When you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. #4the1st ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Update from court: taking a short recess. The judge expects to render a decision on Rümeysa's bail around 1 pm.

The way Rumeysa Öztürk holds her heart as she testifies for her own freedom at a bail hearing in federal court is truly heart-rending. She cannot be freed soon enough.

More than 8 separate asthma attacks, because ICE won't let Rümeysa access all her medications and she's in an unsanitary prison. Free her, and free them all.

Naming it now: Today we will see Rümeysa released.

Everything is stupid.

This entire exchange is wild, but it mirrors every hearing about Rümeysa's case in the northeast so far: judges are exasperated. I find no particular refuge in the legal system as a solution to fascism, but I do find these judges' unwillingness to take bullshit fortifying.

They want to create a society of independent contractors. One where workers see each other as competition rather than comrades or even colleagues. So that workers don't come together to challenge their power. And so that workers willingly accept being exploited for their gain.

Thursday. The School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Noon. It's been a time. Community helps. Come be in it.

Seeing this in my feed next to the Federal Foreign Office's "clapback" at Rubio following 🇩🇪's designation of the far-right AfD as extremist is...something. It speaks to a failure to acknowledge, much less reckon with, *structural* white supremacy in 🇩🇪—which the sign below more directly threatens.

💪 Local 509 members took to the streets today for #MayDay! From Boston to Springfield—we’re building a wave of worker power and nothing can hold us back.

Some of our favorite May Day graphics from @tamimentlibrary.bsky.social 🧵

Happy May Day! Today we mark what the labor movement has won, why we still need unions, and how we can collectively resist a state that would see worker-led activism and worker history erased.

When Greyhound has better policies than a lot of universities.

When you have to build a literal soapbox to stand on because admin keeps telling you your voice doesn't matter. Fair pay and more say for faculty at the SMFA!

Please help us correct misinformation! Our hotline is being incorrectly shared as "Canada's national suicide hotline open toll free for Americans". We are not a general crisis hotline, we exist exclusively to support the trans community. Find out more @ translifeline.org

The state has abducted and imprisoned Rümeysa, denied her regular access to necessary medical care, prevented her from engaging in regular religious practices, and I just...I cannot fathom the utter depravity, the soullessness, that drives ICE, DHS, & this administration.

really pushing this virulent racist white supremacy bullshit just as far as they can, in every corner of society and every media talking point imaginable

ON STRIKE as a member of Durham UCU in response to Durham University management’s proposed staff cuts of £20m. University management has refused DUCU requests to stop compulsory redundancies & to work with us to find non-staff cost savings. Sign the petition: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

The Tufts SMFA admin don't believe faculty, staff, and students are worth consulting before major organizational changes are pushed ahead. We disagree. So do 425 other Tufts affiliates. If you're connected to Tufts, add your name & demand all restructuring efforts be paused.

good job kiddos now if you’re looking for tips and strategies for working in coalition against a powerful amoral force, maybe ask some of the students and professors you suspended last year they’re good at it
