From what I understand, its functionality is on par w/ US AI. Both are leagues away from what tech speculators imagine AI to be capable of.
The market squeeze is coming from the fact that US industries & VCs sunk $500B into AI only for DeepSeek to pop up and complete undermine that R&D investment.

I don’t think it’s excited around DeepSeek itself, but rather hype that DeepSeek is the needle that is puncturing the AI bubble. Its functionality rivals/exceeds OpenAI and is open source. American competitors’ proprietary AI cannot compete since the entire market is primarily fueled by speculation.
