NEW: NIH has turned off researchers' ability to request 'no-cost extensions', which extends their funding without requesting extra money. Now they'll be manually approved by NIH staff. This is to ensure the "activities proposed during the extension align with the NIH mission and agency priorities"

Turns out, saving science costs money. Please consider supporting our fight with a donation to @standupforscience.bsky.social. Every. Single. Dollar. Counts. (really!)

πŸ§ͺ What the f is going on with NSF right now??? 🚨🚨🚨 There's been so many NSF updates within the past 48 hours that it's hard to keep track. It feels like an onslaught. It *is* an onslaught. But it's still vital to remain focused, organized, and strategic. So here's my recap of past 48 hours...

How do language models generalize from information they learn in-context vs. via finetuning? In arxiv.org/abs/2505.00661 we show that in-context learning can generalize more flexibly, illustrating key differences in the inductive biases of these modes of learning β€” and ways to improve finetuning. 1/

Please repost! Our deadline is fast approaching for a 20-month postdoc position leading an fMRI project on the neurodevelopment of metacognition and curiosity. Join a great lab with fantastic collaborators! πŸ™‚

This is beautiful solidarity and commitment. Story doesn’t seem to link the list of names, but the quoted faculty are all political scientists, which makes perfect sense: the folks who understand the stakes. www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

Have been moving full steam ahead and trying to take action since the first round of NSF grant cancellations hit on April 18th and I just finally broke down in front of our dean of research when talking about the early career researchers affected by these terminations 😭

Any toddler that complains about getting only two toys for Christmas will be deported to Honduras. by Marco Rubio

I know this one. The Constitution of the United States.

All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding... I barely have words. Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

Check out our new paper helping more labs include PSG in their developmental cogneuro toolbox! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #devcogneuro #sleeppeeps #cogdevsoc

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ 🍁✊!

🚨 This MUST READ essay and call to action spells out, in very clear terms, how the Trump administration could get away with slashing the NIH budget. NIH scientists and Dems in congress need to read and understand it. This is where we win or lose the battle to save the NIH and US science. πŸ§ͺ 🧠 🧬 πŸ”Š

🧠✨How do we rebuild our memories? In our new study, we show that hippocampal ripples kickstart a coordinated expansion of cortical activity that helps reconstruct past experiences. We recorded iEEG from patients during memory retrieval... and found something really cool πŸ‘‡(thread)

New paper out in SLEEP @sleepjournals.bsky.social! In his study, Jude Thom shows how cortical regions excited by tDCS before sleep express more spindles during subsequent sleep. doi.org/10.1093/slee... @oxexppsy.bsky.social @oxcin.bsky.social @ukri.org

πŸ§ͺ Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧡 On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE). The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases: "not subject to appeal"

Some important additional considerations about the need to comment of the implementation of schedule F. First, several sources have indicated that Institute Director and Division Director positions would likely be converted but not Program Officers. 1/n

Yeah, things are grim. But I gotta tell you: Over the past 7 weeks of organizing around terminated grants, I've met so many inspiring folks both inside and outside of NIH and NSF. Our country is chock-full of badass scientists and Federal employees. We got this, y'all. Keep up the fight πŸ’ͺ

Indiana state legislature just staged a hostile takeover of IU, functionally eliminating tenure, promising to close smaller (hum) majors, taking over the IU board, and cutting the IU budget. This is so bleak

The NSF is in a crisis. its director is out, hundreds more grants have been cut, and it is staring down catastrophic budget cuts and layoffs. Our reporting: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Beautifully said

Nice to see some Canadian universities stepping up with special programs. It won’t solve everything, but it will help at least a few scholars.

We're super excited to announce that we've officially convinced @cgonciulea.bsky.social to join our rag-tag (but VERY classy) team of science nerds this fall as a @dartmouthpbs.bsky.social PhD student πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³πŸ€“πŸ§ πŸ§‘β€πŸ”¬πŸŽ“!!

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov

Update: Thank you SO much to everyone who got in touch with advice. I will definitely be appealing. I also promise to share everything I learn along the way, as well as the text of my appeal, in case useful to others with NIH terminations.

LIVID and horrified (but not surprised) to learn that our R01’s diversity supplement was terminated. This is just idiotic and cruel. Opinions / experience on submitting an appeal? I know it is very unlikely to result in funds being reinstated, but I wonder if there is still some use in submitting?

Now officially out in @psychscience.bsky.social ! journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... @samiyousif.bsky.social

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM Implementation of Schedule F This is what a lot of us have been worried about. This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs. BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD... 1/n

β€œWe must reject the coercive use of public research funding.” Over 150 college & university leaders from big and small institutions have signed a joint statement defending the right to speak β€œwithout fear of retribution, censorship, or deportation.” πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

ATTENTION I am hearing from several sources that "NIH" sent out termination notices for most or all "diversity" awards yesterday to coincide with the new Notice. If you were affected by this and are willing to share, please DM me or reach me on Signal (jeremymberg.78) 1/2

Presenting DR. Tandoc!!! @marlietandoc.bsky.social It has been such a joy to get to work with this brilliant, creative, and fun person. Marlie was key to building both our lab's research program and its community from the very beginning, and we are going to miss her immensely. πŸ’œ πŸ₯²
