This is an incredible piece of writing by @maureenlangloss.bsky.social Please read when you have a moment.

"The main takeaway is this: the rally-round-the-flag effect did not actually resolve the conditions that gave rise to right populism. That anger hasn’t gone away — it’s simply been eclipsed by Trump’s threats and the urgency of national unity. But that détente won’t last."

What would happen to our writing, our politics, our living if we thought of land as pedagogy, theory as something embodied & kinetic? Theory of Water is the touchstone book for me this year, a map for the future. Audio📻🌊: tinhouse.com/podcast/lean... @biidaasamose.bsky.social @haymarketbooks.org

Happy May Day! Disability justice is fundamental to labor organizing and workers rights. If you care about labor rights, make sure you’re not sickening, disabling, or killing your comrades by spreading illness during the rise of fascism. Mask up and lose your chains. Give/get mask mutual aid:

Short, but important 🧵.

“Democracy is not a side issue. To meet our challenges we need an electoral system that favours cooperation over sniping and that encourages us to vote for rather than against.” - @alexhim.bsky.social

“For policy-makers, perhaps the most obvious lesson of the pandemic is that poverty, including child poverty, can be reduced much more quickly than Ontario has done in recent years.”

We lost a few trees overnight as a result of the windstorm. Here are photos of a few of the bigger trees that are now blocking the walking trails in the forest. Neil’s out there right now, working away with a chainsaw.

Good time to remind people that @julieslalonde.bsky.social regularly offers free bystander intervention courses online. Always a great day to learn how to save a life.

We dodged a bullet. Perhaps more political disunity than unity but Canadians avoided policy gridlock in the House exactly when we need a seriously functioning federal government. Now the hard stuff begins. The four big tests on our doorstep👇🏼

this election cycle took years off my life and i genuinely hope we don’t need to do this again for four years

Your dentist can own air purifiers, but they might not be plugged in. They can be plugged in but not turned on. They can be plugged in, turned on, but the red "change the filters" lights can be glowing. Come, healthcare professionals. Take our health - mine & yours! - seriously. You have the tools!

I worked the election in Canada yesterday. The care and attention to detail with keeping ballots and voter information safe and secure before, during and after the vote, not to mention making the election day process easy for voters, is an impressive logistics masterpiece. 🇨🇦

Let it be known that I planned on reading a book in bed while avoiding the ups and downs of the election night coverage but instead, I'm refreshing my stupid phone every 30 seconds while dying of emotional rollercoaster #canpoli

Once again issuing my “progressive urbanists stop talking shit about rural places” challenge. Our future depends on taking rural policy seriously. Sharp rural/urban splits in partisan politics underscore that progressives still can’t run meaningful ground game that engages actual rural realities.

I managed to ignore the election discourse until 5:30 pm. I consider this to be an Election Day miracle. 🗳️🍁

I find it really soothing to stand still and witness the movement of water. Maybe you do, too. (From this afternoon’s visit to the creek.)

We had been hearing this hawk’s distinctive whistle for the past few days. Then, this morning, we actually spotted the hawk soaring above our heads as we walked through the forest. What a memorable moment. What a magnificent bird.

In the Conservative Party TV ad, ex-PM Stephen Harper says Mark Carney worked for him. Fact: Mark Carney was the Governor of the Bank of Canada which is independent of the government. Mark Carney would have worked alongside Stephen Harper but never under his direction. #canpoli #cdnpoli

Canadian Independent Bookstore Day gave me a great excuse to treat myself to a couple of books today (as opposed to, say, tomorrow or yesterday). 📚 I'm really looking forward to reading THE FUN TIMES BRIGADE by Lindsay Zier-Vogel (coming May 1st). bookhugpress.ca/shop/author/... #CIBD #CIBD2025
