Thank you for adding me (tho I’m not a Dr). No man [or woman] is an island entire of itself. Each preventable death & suffering diminishes our shared humanity. We, the people, are the same the world over, despite the efforts of those with power to divide us. Let’s resist division wherever we can. 💚

It just makes me think how long lasting and awful the effects of mistreatment in childhood are. Trump, Musk, Johnson. All damaged beyond repair by childhood trauma.
If we arranged the world around guaranteeing love and support for all children, everything would be fixed in a generation.

Good to read this. Outsight: looking beyond ourselves to see the social & environmental determinants of health & suffering - much needed in my opinion, as David Smail & other community psychologists explain.

Speaking out against established power is dangerous, as this & other painful stories show. With the world in turmoil, & our environment & climate under threat, we need social change. But abusers exploit the turmoil to dominate, divide & conquer. Mutual support & care is more vital than ever.

Yes. Terrible. You’ll have an insider view on other Fellows too. I had an unsettling conversation with someone who’s held a key role in the Society, revealing, at least till recently, apparently widely held blinkered/ dinosaur views there re the determinants of climate change. Tunnel vision?

Thank you for publicly distancing & warning of Musk’s continued membership of Royal Society. Code of conduct: “all Fellows & Foreign Members are expected to follow the Nolan principles of public life, namely: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.”

Horrifying but unsurprising. Farage has a knack (deeply helped by funding from shadowy sources) of rabble rousing the understandably disaffected. It was abundantly clear on UK streets with our political primary in early summer that this is direction of travel, esp with young men.

Yes Charlie. David Smail’s words: comfort, clarify & encourage are life lines to me. Sometimes just listening & being together (or alone) is enough. Restoration. Cups of tea. Park benches. Eye contact. Play. Poetry. Music. Nature. Noticing unintended consequences of bold action too, & correcting.

And as Julia Steinberger well says here, we need a compelling message of care to combat the alluring (to those who feel trampled on) awful messaging coming from authoritarian directions. Love is not ‘
“woke” either. jksteinberger.medium.com/a-few-points...
