The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion. Two decades on, it has generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more. If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

I drove into town today for Indie Bookstore Day. There’s one bookstore in town; it opened a few months ago. There was a line to get in the door! So happy for them.

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

Walz: If you say you love freedom but you don't believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love is not freedom, it is privilege.

Toxicologist here! This will improve the health of zero Americans. Current synthetic food dyes are not causing health problems, and are often times used because they are actually safer than natural food dyes. Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.

Yesterday we passed two different Teslas where the owners had tried to remove the insignia. One still had raised glue. The other, the paint had peeled. Totally black car with bare metal blobs around the letters T, E, S, and A. (Apparently the L came off okay.)

This is getting fewer headlines than it should. After coming to power promising to help working people, the president is revealing his real priorities by actively making it easier for banks to rip people off.

Republicans are trying to steal an election in North Carolina. For the sake of our democracy, let us hope the courts once again prevent that from happening. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/repu...

cis folks, i'm curious for you to share answers, if you want: what made you start caring about trans rights? who'd you know/what happened? tell me the story.

DOGE is a criminal conspiracy to defraud the people of the United States

The WHO priority list for bacterial pathogens is out. Based on factors like burden of infections, AMR etc. This is supposed to guide and highlight areas where research is urgently needed. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

To be clear, these shots are very likely police executing someone or their dog. Without knowing any other facts, it’s a statistical likelihood. Why? 1 in 20 homicides in America are committed by police officers; a full 1/3rd of Americans who are killed by strangers are killed by police.

Really good story, more about the making of the story (and the ethics of making the almost-certainly-not-a-dire-wolf).

How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia? Before you open this thread, take a guess. Settle on a number and then compare it to what you'll learn in this thread. 🧵

And lo, the trailer did drop: www.apple.com/tv-pr/news/2... #murderbot

Every white American who opposes the Trump administration should watch this. Kthxbye. 🇺🇸

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

THEY ARE DOING SANCTUARY MOON THIS IS NOT A DRILL

it’s weird that we’re staring down the second unprecedented economic catastrophe in five years and instead of a novel coronavirus that will go on to kill millions of people this one is just “no one was willing to tell him no”

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) has a bill to return tariff authority to Congress. If it were to pass, the purposeless tariffs would end. Speaker Johnson is blocking it. Call your member of Congress, R or D, & urge a discharge petition on the bill, which forces a vote. U.S. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121.

If you voted for Allison Riggs in the 2024 NC election check here to see if your ballot is being challenged. If so, then you have 15 business days from whenever they mail the notices to cure your ballot, but best to check now & cure yours as soon as possible, even if this ruling might get overturned

How much Elon Musk makes from the government a day: $8 million. How much a senior on Social Security gets a day: $65 Guess which budget Musk and Trump want to cut?

We now need the House to act on this. You need to call your Rep, ESPECIALLY if they're GOP. Don't tell me it won't do any good. Don't concede the fight in advance. Just fucjin call their office and leave a quick voice mail saying you want the tariffs gone.

My kid has a bleeding disorder and we just received an email from the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation that yesterday "nearly all staff within the CDC’s Division of Blood Disorders and Public Health Genomics" will be fired, so fuck you, RFK Jr, and all the senators who approved his nomination.

Would be nice if congress could remember it is illegal for the president to unilaterally impose tariffs
