我聽過的版本是這樣的：商人以100的價格收購鴨子，大量村民去賣，快賣完了，鴨子供應不足了，商人把價格提高到200，進一步刺激鴨子供應，村民把剩下的鴨子全賣了，商人為了收購更多鴨子進一步提價，從200逐漸提到500，但村民已經沒有鴨子了，只能作罷。商人離去，承諾日後再回來繼續收購。另一個遊客到來，聽說此故事之後願意以300的價格提供鴨子給村民，村民大量買入，準備以500賣給商人。他們不知道的是遊客其實就是商人的助理，他們以300買入的鴨子其實就是自己當時以100賣出的那些鴨子，商人也再也沒有出現
