Obviously there are always exceptions and you can find plenty of amazing illustrators who do none of these things haha, but I hope this can be a good starting point for people who are confused!

✏️ Which of these skills do you already have, and which are you working on? Let me know in the comments!

✨ Can your characters express emotions clearly? Do your compositions create movement and flow? Can you maintain consistency across multiple pages? These are just a few of the essential skills every children’s book illustrator needs.

There’s no singular style, but there are trends and certain features people gravitate towards.
You might just need kidlit specific pieces to round out your folio. But IMO I can see you doing well in chapter books or covers since your art is more mature!

In this post, I’m breaking down the six main types of children’s books you can illustrate so you can get a better idea of what might be the best fit for your work.
Are you drawn to bold, simple illustrations for younger readers? Or do you prefer creating expressive artwork for storytelling?

There are many ways to work as a children’s illustrator, and each book category has its own unique format, audience, and artistic style. Some illustrators specialize in one area, while others adapt their work across multiple categories.

It’s funny, I’m also more aware of ‘up and comers’ in publishing but haven’t kept up with animation, so I’m suddenly seeing all this amazing new talent like

Books were my escape as a kid, but also found things lacking in them (positive representation for one). I want to do that for others and be able to make a beautiful world for children and create the books I needed back then too.

I watched it when it was coming out but haven’t touched it since. I want to but I’ve also heard that some parts really don’t hold up well haha (I’m guessing a lot of Barney lol)

It’s so good!! I’ve rewatched it multiple times haha
My only ‘gripe’ is that it can be a bit of a bummer! The state of public education, the low salaries and zero funding etc
It’s not escapist enough for me the way 2000s shows are 😅

I’ve actually never seen it but I think this is exactly what I’m looking for! I was watching Young Sheldon before elementary and I think I need another family sitcom

After having my baby, I’m so tired of the 8-episode episodic streaming series where you have to be LOCKED IN
Give me a sitcom, a procedural! Something cozy I can dip in and out of whenever I have time haha

My bad! Just added that in 😅

Have you ever realized you were charging too little? How did end up adjusting your pricing?
If you guys like these types of posts, let me know! I could do a whole series on pricing if you want 😅

✸ Pricing your work as an artist can seem like a complete mystery, but staying at the same rate for too long can hold you back. If you’re constantly overbooked, struggling to cover expenses, or feeling undervalued, it’s probably time for an increase!
