People tried so hard to follow the law, Byzantine and unjust as it is. They showed up at meetings, filled out the paperwork, went to the courthouse. You responded by kidnapping them in front of their children and dragging them to black sites. This is what’s left. This is all that’s left.

RESOURCE FOR NYC VOTERS

I turn on the headphones, and their little voice says “Battery high, connected.” And it’s a Friday and I’m tired, so I think, “good for you, battery!”

Oh, wow. What are you doing, dear alma mater?

Lots of brilliant scholars here! naeducation.org/current-naed...

Huge congrats to Matt Kautz (TC PhD '23) on his postdoc from NAEd/Spencer!

Good morning. Not now, not ever. [image by @ryancordell.org]

Nothing seems to work right now... but the Buy-Nothing group in my neighborhood will disappear unwanted stuff from my apartment in less than an hour, so my faith in humanity is restored 😜

“I find it hard to respect you if you’re not using your intelligence.” From an amazing centenarian I am lucky to be learning from right now.

All of this. In sorrow tonight.

Still blustery here on June 1, but the seedlings are ready to harden off.

Student journalists doing crucial work, again. If you think you know anything about the Columbia library protest earlier this month, especially if it came from university PR people, you must read this. www.theblueandwhite.org

This is an excellent - and thus terrifying - explainer. $$ + tax credits + “scholarships” - oversight = massive grift

This is wild: UNC-Chapel Hill hasn’t approved a single tenure case outside of Health Sciences since January. Every other case has been deferred. WTF is going on? www.chronicle.com/article/at-c...

“ “The Price Kids Pay” found that thousands of Illinois students had been ticketed…for adolescent behavior… like littering, making loud noises, swearing, fighting or vaping in the bathroom…Black students were twice as likely to be ticketed at school than their white peers.”

THIS. It's crucial to place the casual #eugenics of this 'administration' in a broader context. #ableism #antidisabilityhate

Good news for a student! And good news for a research team! YAY!! And more details when they become shareable.

My publisher, Routledge/Taylor & Francis, paid me £38 for my book's inclusion in the dataset they sold to Microsoft's AI. They did not ask me (or any authors) first. I broke contract and would not recommend working with them.

FYI universe, I have now said yes to my yearly quota of tenure evaluation requests.

This is why I am asking.

It's definitely fascism. But are they in pursuit of feudalism too?

What was your child, or a child you love, doing last Wednesday? Dylan in the Bronx took the day off of school for an immigration hearing with his mom. Before the day was over, they had both been handcuffed, & Dylan was kidnapped by ICE, out of contact with family & lawyers & without medical care.

Quite the time to be a historian of US civil rights and Black freedom struggles. Here's a reading suggestion, from well before we got quote-unquote woke. William Chafe, *Civilities and Civil Rights.* Capsule version? Civility discourse impedes rights. Period. archive.org/details/civi...

“I want students who can come here and add to the conversation on campus, but do it in the right way.” Sure, nothing can go wrong there. www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...

While my eldest was preparing for college graduation and enjoying some free days with friends, high-school student Dylan in the Bronx went to court for his immigration proceedings and there he was kidnapped by ICE.

The first kid graduated from college as a happy human with a good heart.

Today marks five years since George Floyd was killed by police. Our June 22, 2020 cover “Say Their Names,” by Kadir Nelson, illustrated how Floyd’s murder embodies the history of violence inflicted upon Black people in America. nyer.cm/UmfefJw

BREAKING: A 4-4 Supreme Court rules religious schools *CANNOT*I participate in publicly funded charter school programs. (Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board v. Drummond ex rel. Oklahoma, 24-394 & 24-396) #SCOTUS

Horrific murder of two Israeli embassy staffers in the middle of DC. This kind of violence is illegal, immoral, inexcusable and of course - if the chant of ‘free Palestine’ by the alleged shooter is true - solves nothing and helps zero Palestinians.

A new-to-me brand of unsolicited email: "ChatGPT suggested I reach out to you..." 😂

More horrors. Violence gets us nowhere.

Not getting much attention, except in a recent NYTimes story, is a provision to increase the tax on university endowments and those of other nonprofits.

Yep, this place still breaking my heart. AND, I saw my amazing students and met their proud families and that I will keep holding on to through the summer and into our return to campus in the fall.

Jen is listening to the hearings with Ed Dept Secretary Linda McMahon. Her expertise on ed policy makes this a thread worth looking at #EduSky

WTF?! ⬇️

These are the kinds of stories that help to show how vast and devastating the massive cuts to government offices are, and how they impact people's lives. Thanks for sharing your story about your dad with us @ansleyerickson.bsky.social!

Have you been keeping up with all the new books in the Justice, Power, and Politics series this year?
