#OpenAccess in ANZ Journal of Survey. Pilot research to explore experiences of gay/bi men with anorectal surgery. We found poor experiences of aftercare related to sexual wellbeing / function, and opportunities for improvement to surgical education. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

The @austhistassoc.bsky.social statement on UA's new definition of antisemitism:

New #OpenAccess publication from our team in HIV Medicine, led by very talented PhD Candidate Simin Yu, examining how country of birth & migration status shape HIV care engagement among gay and bisexual men living with HIV in Australia (2019-2022). Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Vibes-based methods Something new from me: people are (still) using ‘vibes’ to talk about generative ambiguities and this says something interesting about social life and social research. Here I look across conceptual trends to consider why vibes are the vibe journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

Open access (no paywall) article in Social Science and Medicine, outlining 'the sociology of prescribing'. This is the sort of literature I wish I had access to in one place during my PhD. I outline sociological contributions to understanding drug prescribing. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Open access (no paywall) article in Social Science and Medicine www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... We draw together 'anticipated stigma', 'patient work', and 'inclusivity labour' to explore how diverse priority populations of gay/bi men engage with health services.

Last week I updated my mega-post "What's wrong with the Cass Review?" with new links to analysis and evidence. I have no illusions about the current political landscape. It will likely take years to undo Cass' act of sabotage. But I am in this fight for the long haul and hope you are too.

We did interviews with multiple people who refused to turn their camera on, responded with a delay, and even asked us to put the questions in the chat. Super obvious they were using an LLM. But it shocked us. They thought they could get away with pretending to be a medic during a live interview!

Fab to have my achievements recognised with a promotion to Research Fellow / Lecturer. Academia can be quite the hustle, but I genuinely love the people and community partners I work with and the sociological and applied health research we are able to do in HIV, sexual health, and LGBTQ+ health.

Our latest paper showed event-driven PrEP (ED-PrEP) use among GBMSM in Australia increased from 7.6% of PrEP users in 2019 to 27.8% in 2023. Read the full open access short report here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #HIVPrevention #PrEP #PublicHealth

New open access article from our team. Event-driven / on-demand (AKA 2-1-1) PrEP use has tripled between 2019-2023 in Australia, with 28% of gay/bi men and other men who have sex with men now using event-driven PrEP in 2023. Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Last push for the Poz Award, am currently tied! Vote, if of interest, and help the issue of HIV criminalization be popularly recognized by this US publication #HIVISNOTACRIME www.poz.com/article/poz-...

Our updated MPOX (monkeypox) info site is now available in English, Spanish and Portuguese (Polish to follow). Stay up-to-date here - www.queerhealth.info/projects/mpox

Been a bit absent from here, but a good opportunity to reconnect! Here's a key piece of research we published this year on qualitative experiences of mpox diagnosis and care in Qualitative Health Research. Open access here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

New open article from Stephen Molldrem and I in Social Studies of Science. Drawing on ideas about publics and health/social movements, we introduce the concept of 'health policy counterpublics' to describe activism against molecular HIV surveillance in the US. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

aidsmap have written an excellent summary of our research findings on PrEP dosing practices: www.aidsmap.com/news/nov-202...

Our open access article on PrEP dosing practices is in issue in Sociology of Health & Illness. Considering the mundane domestic practices of dosing generates insight into how adherence is materialised and how conditions for capacitating dosing might be better supported. dx.doi.org/10.1111/1467...

Important arguments here, that I think also have a lot of relevance for not-for-profits. We operate in a weird space, between mandated data collection from funders and data that serves our own organisational motives.

The CIHR HIV Trials Network (CTN) did a profile on me and a collaborative project I'm part of on the problems of genetic surveillance in public health research. Thanks, CTN! www.hivnet.ubc.ca/news/2023/10...

IMPORTANT NEW PAPER just published on gatekeeping in gender-affirming care. Colleagues and I just published a paper that reviews the literature on gender assessments in gender-affirming care. We conclude they don’t work! Link: psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/...

New paper in Health Sociology Review on the problem of 'imposter participants' in incentivised qual research. How do we navigate this while maintaining successful recruitment and reciprocal trust between researchers - community - participants? Free copy: www.tandfonline.com/eprint/G2ZUB...

I’d say this banned-books story horrifies me because I’m queer, but honestly I don’t think I’d be less horrified if I were straight. It’s the kind of insanity that should worry anyone who cares about a) living in a free society or b) other people. popular.info/p/florida-sc...

New article in AJOB Empirical Bioethics exploring varied perspectives amongst critical stakeholders on the possibility of consent in molecular HIV surveillance. Free copies here: www.tandfonline.com/eprint/9WAWE...

Check out our open access article in AIDS and Behavior examining HIV prevention coverage (condoms, PrEP, undetectable viral load) across Australia. While PrEP is most common prevention method, younger folk and bi men need to be prioritised for enhanced access. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
