Last yr in Prague at a Vietnamese restaurant, I noticed that banh mi, pho, kari, coffee were all kinda different from what we get in US Vietnamese restaurant. Exploring why, I learned it's cos of how USSR made North Vietnam pay for the war. Free labor in Prague! Didn't know this story! Smol 🧵

HOW THE AI RACE IS LIKE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EUROZONE From today's newsletter, on the "bubble" and pursuit of the "fantastic object"

This is some cutting edge AI Assistance in JIRA from Atlassian Intelligence.

Two things can be simultaneously true: 1. Generative AI will be transformative in the medium to long term. 2. The Gen AI market is a bubble. The dotcom bubble was based around a real, very important technology.

Apple's quiet pivot to India: our deep dive into one of global industry's biggest "China + 1" manoeuvres is today's FT Big Read. on.ft.com/3CV6fSe

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

I reviewed Dell's latest XPS 13 laptop with Intel Lunar Lake processor — likely the last one before it's renamed "Dell Premium." Come for the lowest score I've ever given anything, but stay for my ranting about this terrible keyboard and infuriating function row. www.theverge.com/reviews/6111...

Thomson Reuters has won the first major AI copyright case in the US. The decision has big implications for the battle between generative AI companies and rightsholders.

When will the market price in GenAI for the likes of Accenture?

I use AntennaPod as the podcast player. A very thoughtful feature is that it resumes an episode with a 10 second rewind. Helps immensely in re-establishing context after a listening break.

This is my new favorite headline

If your customer support LLM thing says "I've sent this conversation to our team of specialists" and doesn't actually do that, that's not a hallucination, it's an unforgivable bug

"A few members of the geriatric legislature body offered scattered social media posts condemning the move, but parliament —where both houses are controlled by so-called “MAGA” members [loyal] to the president — went home early for the weekend even as Musk’s forces spread through the capital streets"

My biggest issue with Route 53 is that a “hosted zone” is a small text file in BIND, yet they charge 50¢ a month for each of them. It’s not just a database because it’s a key-value store, it’s also a database because they charge like freaking Oracle.

@bsky.app a small feature request. The Discover feed needs some indication of whether a post is standalone or part of a thread.

I don't understand some of the criticism of LLMs. Was it the same when the Wright brothers invented the airplane? "This is not really flying!" "This is a cheap imitation of real flight!" "This takes so much more energy to fly compared to birds .. this is definitely the wrong approach to flying!"

@simonwillison.net any plans of refreshing django-sql-dashboard? Especially this PR :-) github.com/simonw/djang...

i was not expecting the “gary gensler didn’t do enough to crack down on crypto” pivot

Trump is smart. Why make a Bitcoin fed reserve when he can make a $TRUMP fed reserve. There's no intrinsic difference between the two other than who is holding the coins now.

Trump set the TikTok ban in motion Congress passed legislation Biden signs legislation SCOTUS upholds ban Biden says his administration wouldn’t enforce the law, leaving room for TikTok to stay open TikTok shuts down anyway Trump tweets TikTok pretends Trump saved it 🙄

Microsoft and Google users trying figure out how to turn off their ‘AI assistants’.

one thing i’m stuck on is this idea that “masculine” energy means license to act like a chud in public, as opposed to more traditional notions of public masculinity, such as those that put a premium on the performance of integrity, honesty, honor and generosity.

AWS Lambda functions have an incredible opportunity to rebrand as agents

Kelsey is a class act. Such a thoughtful response to an obviously bad-faith and mean message.

Wrote a little story... antrix.net/posts/2025/f... #fiction #sci-fi

I have been trying Google's Gemini 2.0 flash thinking model and I like it compared to OpenAI o1. The problem with o1 is that it's too opinionated. It just does stuff without discussing options and approaches. It also struggles to make targeted changes to previous responses.

This is such an annoying bug. superuser.com/questions/91...

Dude, you got a Dell, period! RIP XPS, Inspiron, Latitude, Precision

To the Google Maps PM that decided that when I search for something, it should default the search to where I am rather than the actual damn area that I am looking at... Please reconsider your life choices.

Cool list! Of these, I've switched to ghostty, have had a jj tutorial tab open for ages, and didn't like Zed (trying Cursor instead). I should also give fish a shot.

well shit.
