If Trump is serious about tariffs on movies, it's a very dangerous escalation. Tariffs have not traditionally been applied to services, and the United States is a massive net exporter of services. We would be extremely vulnerable to any service-based retaliation.

Now the Trump admin is trying to ruin both these sectors that represent soft power and export earnings.

1. Canadian universities are chronically underfunded. 2. Canadian researchers are chronically underfunded. 3. Even if $$ magically appeared to support Canadians and some incoming "star" Americans, those Americans would leave again the moment things looked like they were getting better down south.

All the talk is of universities depending on the federal government, but it’s the opposite. The federal government depends on these great institutions to move science and knowledge forward. Sabotaging that is an act bordering on treason.

After a long bit of toiling, we're proud to announce the launch of Gander Social—a project to bring a new kind of social to Canadians. Canadian owned and hosted, a feed you control, privacy-first, consent-based, respectful by default. Join the Early Access program: gandersocial.ca

Texas conservatives who've championed book bans & anti-LGBT policies suffered big losses tonight in school board races. And They seem to have lost their working majorities to pass their policies in big school boards. I tracked these results in FOUR boards tonight. So a 🧵 on each ICYMI.

SaveNSF is a coalition of concerned scientists and allies who are working to save funding for scientific grants through the NSF. The mission is to support and advocate for the continuation of vital research and innovation. Join: www.savensf.com

I don’t know about you but I’m done flying through DCA until this administration is gone.

There’s some inaccurate NSF information spreading and causing extra panic. New increments on existing awards are paused. But: to the best of my knowledge, drawdown (reimbursement) on existing increments is not paused. ACMS is still accessible. Could change at any moment, though. Please share.

Your regular reminder that NSF grants built the internet and helped the U.S. dominate tech.

$9 billion a year for NSF is absolute chump change. It's nothing. And yet, cutting it will devastate American science for decades. God, we're led by a morons, empowered by idiots.

‘Kennedy told reporters that there were "many, many good ways to treat measles and doctors need to know that and to know those methods.’ One problem; there is no treatment for measles. Signed, a doctor who’s been forced to deal with measles because of this stupid fraud.

Science is squeezed from both ends. Grant funding is being withheld, and at the same time our operating expenses are increasing dramatically because of tariffs.

Time to catch up on the past week’s news about science and medicine in the US. Whew. 1/10

⭐️⭐️⭐️UPDATE: SB 37 will be heard in the House Higher Ed Committee on Tuesday. Please contact the committee members every day until then to oppose the bill. Use this handy tool ⬇️

We're in an epic, generational crisis.

"A report by economists at American University in Washington DC estimates that a 50% reduction in federal science funding would reduce the US gross domestic product by approximately 7.6%." Science is an amazing engine of economic activity and progress for the US ... or at least it was.

BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Even if we define "do your own research" as "look up a paper," ask yourself: * Who is the lead author? Are they respectable? * What is the study protocol? Is the result statistically significant? * Are the results consistent with the literature? If you can't answer, don't "do your own research."

“And I’m like, what do you mean, you ‘do your own research’? You running a double-blind study in your living room, dawg?” - A guy walking ahead of me with his friends on a NYC sidewalk in 2021, also my favorite overheard dialogue of the entire pandemic

This is the point about Trump’s poll numbers already slipping below 40. We haven’t even seen any shortages or price hikes yet. That’s all still coming.

Another amazing postdoc whose funding was cancelled. Dr. Zhang is doing basic research on how children develop stereotypes based on the statistics of their social environment. This is cutting-edge psychological research that's now been interrupted 😠

‼️They’re killing one of our strongest exports‼️ Colleges and universities are among America’s MOST competitive international exporters… more than natural gas and coal COMBINED.😡 @crampellw.bsky.social @meganranney.bsky.social @noamross.net @arghavansallesmd.medsky.social @boghuma.bsky.social

Exactly. Decarbonization increases energy security. I wrote a short piece about it: rdcu.be/eg3lR

SCOOP: three days after Kilmar Abrego García’s family sued the govt for his wrongful deportation, US officials began working on plan to fix the mistake and ensure his safety in El Salvador until they could bring him back. Then the Trump administration dug in www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Remarkable from WaPo poll: Trump sinking fast on immigration among independents. 56% disapprove of handling of issue 62% oppose removing foreign students 52% oppose renditions to El Salvador Only 21% want Abrego Garcia left there Engage, Dems. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1944...

👇🎯 They. Are. Breaking. Signed. Contracts. For. No. Legal. Reason. You want to pass legislation not funding this stuff going forward? Fine. Epically idiotic, but legal. This is something else. Shredding the basic foundations of the rule of law. Textbook authoritarianism.

URGENT ACTION FOR NSF GRANTEES. For current & recent (since 2020) awards, archive your award history this afternoon/tonight. Screenshot/download/print your work in research.gov & alert your partners. We have credible threats to integrity of awards tracking systems (via @jeremymberg.bsky.social)

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov

Very sad day. Panch had a rough ride the last 3 months, but I know what that's like. He was a great source of encouragement and passion for science for us all. All best to everyone at NSF dealing with all this. www.science.org/content/arti...

Every year, my last lecture is on Human Evolution and I ask myself why every textbook waits to introduce the difference between species and gene trees at the last possible minute.

Actually, flip the headline. It's really "How the Federal Government Became so Dependent on Universities." These competitively awarded, peer reviewed research grants produce tremendous returns on investment. New tech, health, science that benefit all people & businesses in the USA & world.

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

Shitty explanation. Better one: NSF has spent decades carrying out the legal requirement placed on it by Congress to try to attrract more women and members of underrepresented groups into STEM. Now Trump is forcing the agency to violate this law.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.
