When your “trade talk” strategy is going super well. 🤡 @reuters.com 🇯🇵 www.reuters.com/markets/asia...

This is impoundment, it is illegal, and that should be in the headline www.npr.org/2025/05/02/n...

NEW POST: A landmark election - some quick thoughts emmettmacfarlane.substack.com/p/a-landmark...

What a nightmare. We have crossed this bridge in the past. We have taken the binational tunnel as well. It is so scary to see what fellow Venezuelans are going through. My heart breaks for the family.

Love the Earth It’s the only planet that has cats. Happy Earth Day 😻

#Crypto began as an anti-state, anti-credit project. Now it's an integral part of the state-backed credit system - just think of Trump’s 'Bitcoin Reserve'. How and why did this happen? Find answers in our new open-access article in @ripejournal.bsky.social: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The Canadian Association of University Teachers has issued a travel advisory strongly recommending that academic staff only travel to the USA if absolutely essential. Each successive day of the catastrophic Trump regime represents more research partnerships ruptured and conference halls empty.

Reminder of global economic (& ecological) impact of US tariffs - deepening shift to S. America as a major ag commodity exporter as countries scramble to buy from anywhere but the US; already a premium on Brazilian soybeans; deforestation and ag chem use likely to rise. www.ft.com/content/3b10...

Striking visual of US import reliance on goods made in China. Buckle up, Americans, prices are about to rise on many items! www.ft.com/content/ec96...

Depressing that the UN must remind the US that LDCs will be disproportionately harmed by Trump's tariffs The tariffs go against decades of understanding re: special & differential treatment for the poorest countries in trade agreements & could spur a debt crisis. www.ft.com/content/a843...

Human Rights Watch has officially categorized US deportations of Venezuelans to El Salvadoran prisons as forced disappearances. www.hrw.org/news/2025/04...

Today I got my copy of Authoritarian Consolidation in Times of Crisis, edited by @jpolga.bsky.social and Raúl Sánchez Urribarrí. A nice present in troubled times. Thanks to the editors for their amazing work and to @benedictebull.bsky.social and Manuel Sutherland for awesome team effort.

They just need to file habeas petitions from CECOT in El Salvador, surely the friendliest of venues.

NEW: By a 5–4 vote, the Supreme Court LIFTS Judge Boasberg's restraining order against the deportation of migrants under the Alien Enemies Act. The majority holds that migrants must file habeas petitions where they're confined. Liberals + BARRETT dissent. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Nayib Bukele's bitcoin experiment in El Salvador has done almost nothing for ordinary Salvadorans. Instead, as our article of the week shows, the policy enriches Bukele’s inner circle and courts starry-eyed crypto bros abroad. By @antuliorosales.bsky.social & Titus Meijering buff.ly/OBxl2LQ

"The mass criminalization, arbitrary detainment and violation of due process that have characterized the Trump administration’s actions so far have echoed some of the tactics of the Venezuelan regime many of these young men presumably fled from." www.nytimes.com/2025/04/04/o...

Excellent piece by colleagues @dsmilde.bsky.social @beccahanson.bsky.social and Verónica Zubillaga Some highlights below 🔽

“In most cases,” he argued, “the end result of tariffs is that it doesn’t solve a trade deficit, it just means you trade less, you import less, you export less, the overall deficit doesn’t typically change.” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/03/b...

The tariff chaos is gives cover to concentrated firms to raise prices well beyond their cost increases. As my @ipes-food.org colleague @grocerynerd.bsky.social told the NYT: “Consumers won’t know if things are priced correctly or they are getting ripped off.” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/03/d...

"La realidad es mucho más simple y disparatada... lo que ha hecho el equipo de Trump es simplemente calcular el déficit comercial de EEUU con un país o un bloque concreto. Y la cifra resultante, partirla por el total de las importaciones norteamericanas"

I'm delighted that Authoritarian Consolidation in Times of Crisis: Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro, the book I co-edited with Raúl Sánchez Urribarrí, has officially been published! It is available at in paperback, hardcover and eBook almost everywhere. See: www.routledge.com/Authoritaria...

This is such a remarkable place. It must be defended.

Deranged authoritarians: "We can claim with huge probability that some unconventional weapon, some version of a sonic cannon, was used" "I have a lot of experience in participating and monitoring street protests & I have never seen a stampede happen in a second and along an almost straight line"

I couldn’t help to feel the same. And also, I worry about the many academics stuck and surveilled in the US but also other authoritarian contexts ( #Venezuela, #Turkey, #Serbia…) with less chance to access protection because they have less clout and come from non elite institutions.

These stories are so important, I translated them for Venezuelan news outlet Efecto Cocuyo. Please read and share!

What a heart-wrenching piece.

“The invader cannot consolidate control if citizens and their institutions refuse to comply with its rule. The tactics involve a complete refusal to co-operate with the occupying force along with open defiance.”

“The way it’s been presented is this tech solutionist approach that has been proven over and over again to not have any substantial impact in reality.” www.wired.com/story/trump-...

"He used the word “meant.” Canada is “meant” to be the fifty-first state. That is the language of manifest destiny. That is the language of you must become one of us. It is America’s destiny; it is my destiny to expand America to absorb the whole continent."⬇️

With everything happening in the US right now, how safe are scientific conferences for foreign participants in the US? I think this is something we have to discuss as a scientific community. I am hesitating to register for US meetings due to the unpredictable situation. Others who feel the same?

Read Mahmoud Khalil’s letter from detention:

I would like to understand what constitutes an ideologically motivated crime and why a clearly patriarchal act of violence does not qualify as such.
