When I say 'not healthy'...All my current friends are in some way connected back to a core of people I met over 20 years ago at university. If I leave this city, I will not make new friends - I simply don't know how. I have not made a new friend independently since...the early 2000s?

Every time I got into the bush recently I have a very intense feeling of not wanting to go back to my inner city suburb and/or society as a whole. "Well, go live there!" I hear you say - please don't encourage me to become more weird & isolated, I need other people to around to anchor me to reality

I don't think I will be able to find anyone who is willing to do the whole thing with me - tbh it probably wouldn't be a good idea to take a friend on a 2 week hike anyway because I am a horrendous travel companion. Not sure if 2 weeks alone in the bush would be healing or send my off the deep end.

Like social conventions want everyone to a) have a romantic and sexual partner and b) have *only one* partner combining all of their needs in those domains. Deviating from that in various ways, including non-monogamy and aro/ace orientation makes people hostile and judgy
comment in response to post
I feel like the pressure on non-monogamous period to put all their emotional/romantic/sexual eggs in one basket and community to one partner definitely comes from a similar place to the judgement of ace/aro people for not 'partnering' in a way that's acceptable/recognisable to mainstream society

A bit like maths graduates get told 'if you have a high tolerance for boredom and wanna make a *tonne* of money, become an actuary'.

Basically my impression was sort of 'It's boring and you'll pigeonhole yourself, but it's a pretty cushy pigeonhole if you can handle that'

This is so weird to hear given that I have heard a lot of tech people talking about COBOL programmers having impressive salaries & great job security because it's a language that 1) not many people want to learn & 2) is essential to the running of a couple of very profitable industries.

These people don't seem to approve of women changing their bodies to please *themselves*, which is actually not very surprising, because it was never about women's freedom and agency in the first place. (2/2)

There are definitely a lot of feminists of older generations who think all cosmetic surgery is evil - I was brought up to believe that (I don't anymore) along with very strong opposition to high heels, makeup, etc. It was all justified as opposition to 'women harming themselves to please men' (1/2)

Look, given how many cats there are that require fosters, there is one of pretty much every personality type. Our Nim is kind of like what you describe. She would like to hang out in the same room as her people, often sitting right next to them, but she's not after constant, active attention.

Cut it up and bake it with some other root veggies?

Yeah, I've had a really mixed response when asking people - some people said they could, at least to some extent. I couldn't do it no matter how hard I concentrated. I couldn't feel anything from my heart & if I concentrated too hard on my body I started to feel weird & anxious 😬

This study says that many people *are* consciously aware enough of their pulse at rest to be able to count beats. I can't even count my heartbeats if I try. I can only take my pulse by putting my fingers up to my jugular vein. Apparently that's...not normal?

Gotta level up from just touching grass to touching decomposing leaf litter on the forest floor, surrounded by trees that are older than your great grandparents.

Are other people not constantly sitting on a bursting suitcase of bad bodily and mental sensations to keep them from getting out?? Is this why I'm so tired all the time???
comment in response to post
I feel like sone of this is innate & some is learned though. If I paid attention to every 'bad' feeling I have, either physically or emotionally, I'd never be able to function. I'm constantly uncomftable both physically & psychologically but I've just had to learn to block it & get on with things
comment in response to post
I am not bad at interoception if I deliberately pay attention to my body. Most of the time I don't pay attention to it though, especially if I'm busy with something else. I'll eventually realise that I'm feeling 'bad' & have to think a bit to track it back to 'oh, I desperately need to pee/eat/move'

Bro looks like he's fucking melting, both physically and psychologically

Actually the number of women in their 40s and 50s at work who have ND school age children and should probably be doing some reflecting about their own neurotypes is... Signficant.
comment in response to post
I have a colleague with 2 ND children, who is very clearly ND too but either no one has suggested she be assessed or she is in denial. (She can be an uncomftable mirror for me because she does a lot of things that annoy me, but which on reflection I realise are things *I* do)
comment in response to post
I know a handful of staff in my office who are open about being neurodivergent and there are quite a few who I think are but don't talk about it. There is, however, an additional, significant population who I'm pretty sure just don't know yet 👀

This is like hearing people say the like dating 'older women' and then the women in question are like 35.

I can't help but hear this in my mind as a different voice/volume for each font - 'You can feel' *declaims boldly* 'ten percent cooler' *regains composure* 'than the thermometer' *mumbles non-committally* 'by using proper food' *yelling hysterically* 'GRAPE NUTS' *sotto voce, in parting* 'supply it'

Yeah, I know of large crowdfunding campaigns that have run into problems when trying to use the funds for their intended purpose because when banks saw them making large transfers they simply blocked them as potential money laundering and it was very hard to get them un-blocked.

My personal experience* with Gramnar boys did not suggest to me that they (or their school culture) are actually any better than other private boys schools, so I'm guessing their reputation is just better managed. *(This all dates back to the late 90s, so idk what they're like now)

My stupid private school isn't well known enough for anyone to have added any controversies. The 'Notable Alumni' section is like 10 people, despite the school being over 150 years old.
