Per Dr Atul Gawande, ex USAID: “All malaria supplies protecting 53 million people, mostly children, including bed nets, diagnostics, preventive drugs, and treatments – terminated.” There are no words that sufficiently describe this level of cruelty and sadism.

Ted Cruz said he’d found $2 billion in “woke” science grants, but his team used keyword searches that flagged things out of context, like a grant to develop a device to treat severe bleeding that mentioned “victims” and “trauma.” www.propublica.org/article/ted-...

While some of the impacts of these firings may be short-term, we will likely only see the true extent of the damage over time, when reduced prediction & modeling capabilities for impending disasters & hazards end up being counted in lives & properties lost 😔 www.axios.com/2025/02/28/n...

A rally to protect the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is planned for Monday, March 3, 10 a.m. - noon at NOAA's headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. Details are at this website: www.mobilize.us/mobilize/eve...

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

The ocean is the biggest carbon sink on Earth. If you're interested in, say, burning more fossil fuels but want a hedge against catastrophe, studying ocean CDR seems like something you might want to put at least a few resources into

Trying to remember why we started rewatching The West Wing. Seems like a particularly toxic way to live vicariously through Sorkin’s world; one in which political leaders spoke in coherent sentences, inspired confidence, & earned respect even if you disagreed with their positions. 😣 #thegoodolddays

It IS dangerous, but simply noting that doesn’t solve anything. NOAA does work that LITERALLY SAVES lives and prevents damage to & the loss of BILLIONS of $$ worth of property & resources. Extreme weather events are not exactly getting less frequent and devastating. Use your power to fix this!

NWS AND NOAA LAYOFFS: “The Trump administration on Thursday informed hundreds of probationary employees responsible for producing critical weather forecasts, maintaining radar systems, gathering data from satellites and monitoring key commercial fisheries that they were fired.” - WaPo

I cannot even begin to underscore how disastrous the firings at NOAA are. They’ve already been woefully understaffed and this is the equivalent of amputating a limb and letting the body bleed out. This is going to have far-reaching impacts. And they are *not* going to be good. 😣

Imagine going back in time 300 years and telling people that in the future we can predict the weather down to the minute but also we decided to just fire the people who do that because being right about the weather got boring or something.

BREAKING: A federal judge in California has ordered OPM to rescind memos calling for the mass termination of probationary employees, saying the agency overstepped its legal authority and must inform other agencies it lacked the authority to issue such a directive.

💥 BREAKING: At Apple's 2025 annual meeting of shareholders today, proposal entitled “Request to Cease DEI Efforts" is rejected by shareholders. Right-wing nonprofit National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR) proposal was also rejected by Costco shareholders 98-2 percent.

Businessman billionaire uses traditionally-a-public service (news) to secure his personal agenda & profit. Shocking! 😒 Even if, as some WaPo reporters have reiterated for the public, the news and opinion sections *are* separate, Shipley quitting isn’t exactly a show of faith in this new directive.

I heart Tina Smith.

👉🏼 We *can* debate how to address climate change but “…the proposition that (GHG) emissions from human activities don’t endanger public health & welfare is not a position that could be supported by the science or what EPA’s own record suggests.” - Sean Donahue www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

“Peter Lehner, a lawyer for Earthjustice, said the pages being purged were crucial for farmers facing risks linked to climate change, including heat waves, droughts, floods, extreme weather and wildfires.” By Karen Zraick in @nytimes.com

As February comes to a close (still hard to believe sometimes), the garden is showing beautiful pops of color starting to come in. Really needed this glorious morning with the sun out ☀️, drink-morning-coffee-on-patio weather, & garden colors coming in! ☺️ T-minus 5 days to starting cut flower seeds!

In a job market that was already rough, and now has thousands of new folks in its throes, this gesture is timely, considerate, and genuinely worthy of respect. 🫡 Excellent example set by @ametsoc.org. I hope other professional societies follow suit; at the very least out of solidarity & empathy.

On Friday, Feb. 21 (still winter), solar alone met a peak of 106.7% of California grid demand, and #WindWaterSolar met a peak of 121.8% of demand. WWS supply exceeded 100% demand for 4.7 hours. 8th day in a row and 24th out of 52 days in '25 with > 100% WWS Gas down 28% and demand ~constant v '24

This is climate arson, yes, but also the entire value proposition of Tesla, the reason for its insane stock price, is that it would end up the Amazon of electric cars: the only real game in town. Killing off non-Tesla electric car infrastructure is a gift to Musk.

"Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose." - Helen Keller #Resist #AltGov

🔔: The Senate just confirmed Kash Patel as the new FBI Director. Both AP and NBC reporting. And with that piece of information, I shall now proceed to look for something stronger than coffee in my kitchen. Thankfully there’s a new #PathofExile league out today too! 😶 www.nbcnews.com/politics/jus...

I can’t even fathom the privilege one has to have to think that people living paycheck to paycheck or in literal poverty have an “easier” life. Imagine being so out of touch with reality that you’re upset you’re famous & only have a million $$, & think the avg person isn’t working all the time.😒

This is honestly the only kind of news I *want* to be seeing right now. It reminds me of the incredible science and super fun or totally whacky things we could be focused on and creating awesome memes about instead of trying to stay on top of headlines that get exponentially worse by the hour! 😞

FYI- You don’t have to be an “environmentalist” to care about climate change’s effects. If you’re a living organism - human, seagull, moquito, bacteria, octopus - your home, life, & future are impacted. Is the US the only large country that’s *still* denying climate change (& the metric system)?

I rounded up a bunch of local reporting on what cuts to agencies like the National Parks Service and the Forest Service could mean for public lands. We may never be able to draw a direct line between the decimation of the civil service and future catastrophes. But the consequences are inevitable.🌎🧪

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

On the list of all the ways in which this tyrannical oligarchy is decimating democracy, hearing & seeing the pain, betrayal & grief in voices of the OUTSTANDING Federal workers I collaborate with hits really hard. Axing people who truly believed in the system & its leaders is an incalculable loss 😞

Hard work finally paying off with some new blooms! Candytuft, Geranium, Maraschino fruit punch Dianthus, and Muscari / hyacinth 🪻 all blooming and adding some MUCH needed color, brightness, and joy to the lovingly created backyard garden. Now awaiting the Potatoes 🥔, Garlic 🧄, Spinach 🥬 & Carrots 🥕

The community note 🤌😘

This is probably the most accurate take.

😂😂

I heard that some of you people prefer to receive your snarky science fact-checking of viral news stories in meme format, and I am here to help.

Washington Post got their hands on internal documents from DOGE showing the entire plan to implement resegregation. They're going to purge minorities from government by calling them DEI. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/int...

What might seem like a toddler temper tantrum on its surface, is actually a global - not nationwide - mission to reject facts and science. FYI to other nations (looking at you, Europe) in foreign policy discussions - You *are* allowed to hold your US counterparts to higher standards & basic decency😐

Doing the unthinkable: The deep cuts to the #CDC's workforce today are expected to decimate the Epidemic Intelligence Service, a program that has trained public health rapid responders for decades. Envy of the world. Poof! www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

BREAKING: Europe to be EXCLUDED from Ukraine peace talks, says US envoy. Outrageous that Trump/Putin think they can carve up European territory. EU provides more aid to Ukraine than the US. And Ukraine is in Europe! The summit of EU leaders in Paris tomorrow should declare a security emergency.

This is so smart. @petebuttigieg.bsky.social , thoughts ? And if you see this. A reminder. This is not Twitter. You can engage here and have thoughtful discussions ! We all look forward to reading your thoughts

"Until greenhouse gas emissions are actually reduced to net zero, heat and drought extremes will continue to intensify across the world, causing greater problems for agriculture and food prices than those we are currently facing" www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In case you’re looking to curate your Podcast listening list or subscriptions, this may be a handy starting point if Climate Change is on the top of your priority information-seeking and learning interests.

So the US is now kidnapping whole families and trafficking them to random countries that the US has coerced into imprisoning them for some unspecified period of time

It's a scam, it's a grift, it's a crime spree

No shit. You could argue this is the point.

In a world of TL;DRs, this may be one of the most crucial and useful ones.

This is like a bank robber getting to fire the cops and disable the alarms just before he strolls into the bank lobby.

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons: -We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S. -The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous. 🧵⬇️
