I remember my language tutor talking about the arbitrary, non-intrinsic nature of linguistic signifiers. He took a big heavy book and demonstrated by ruffling the pages etc. that there was nothing there to relate it to the phonemes of "book". Then he slammed it triumphantly shut. It went "bk".
