Synergy: 1) It's possible no cost extensions for grants will be hard to get now. 2) There are thousands of former federal employees with skills and no jobs. Could be good time to refactor grant budgets to allow short term hiring of some great newly available people, maybe to work remotely.

This katydid from Ecuador has been affectionately named by photographers "candy-cane katydid". The truth is... we are not sure which species it is. One possibility is a Harroweria nymph, but until someone witnesses the transformation into the adult stage it will remain a mystery.

A new tool shows you how much federal funding tied to the Inflation Reduction Act and Biden-era infrastructure legislation is being spent in any given zip code. There's more than $1B within 10 miles of me, from battery manufacturing to cybersecurity. What's in your area? grist.org/accountabili...

Firing experts πŸ§ͺ who can identify agricultural pests πŸ› early on might not be the best thing if you really wanted to lower food prices. But maybe that was never the point ...

Today, the USDA lost experts in Psylloidea, Thysanoptera, Cerambycidae, Hymenoptera, Pseudococcidae, and Malacology. This is a devastating loss of expertise, occuring without warning. Their union's official statement on the issue can be found here: aginspectors.org/2-14-2025-a-... #entomology πŸ§ͺ

Do you have any wolf spiders (Lycosidae) collected in the last couple of years? If so, I am looking for specimens from any species and any location *in the world* to add to a genetic study of the family. Let me know if you think you can help!

@entsocamerica.bsky.social is collecting stories about how various actions taken by the federal government recently are impacting ESA members and hindering entomological research. You do need to be an ESA member to participate. app.smartsheet.com/b/form/7a1ed...

I usually reserve this account for my personal views; but today I want to represent my position as President of @asn-amnat.bsky.social to post a message that will shortly go out to the membership of the American Society of Naturalists from the ASN Executive Council

For #FossilFriday may I present to you an amazing scorpion, Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis. It may look like the moult of a modern species, but these are actually ~330 million year old fossils, dissolved out of a rock from 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 using acid. βš’οΈπŸ§ͺπŸ¦€πŸ¦‘ #evosky

Such a strange structure isn’t it? Inspired by @nickybay.bsky.social @arachnonaut.bsky.social #Poltys #iNaturalist #bug #entomology #Insect #Spider #web #silk #watercolor #procreate #ipad #draw #micro #art #plant #foliage #woven #sac #pink #discovery #animal #strange #mystery #egg #paint #ecology

This is the mystery spider egg sac covered with a veil of pink silk that was determined to be woven by a Poltys based on several rounds of discussion on iNaturalist and Twitter. Thanks to @arachnonaut.bsky.social for the lead!

Also roadside rural mail carrier surveys for #birds are super cool, and this Audubon magazine headline (β€œYou’ve Got Quail”) is top-notch www.audubon.org/news/youve-g...

Oak treehoppers have my whole heart. These photos show the difference in size between mamas and their offspring at varying instars. I love them so much. πŸ’› Mamas stay with their babies throughout their development, protecting them from predators like wasps. Unusual behavior for a bug.

Hey folks- do you identify as being a member of a systemically minoritized group? Have you also worked, recreated, and/or conducted research in the outdoors? We're looking for more folks to contribute short narratives regarding their experiences. Ping me if interested! πŸ§ͺ🌍

Finally got a picture of this little escapee! I study mating and hybridization. Canopy jumpers and regal jumpers have different niches, but they can overlap, hybridize, and produce adorable offspring. This one has been living on my desk for a bit. #Spiders #Invertebrates #Macro #Science #SciComm

Arachnids and Magic The Gathering!!! πŸ¦‚πŸ§™ Love it when #biology and #gaming intersect

I've posted it several times but the deadline is this Friday: encourage undergraduate students you're working with to apply to this fantastic program! We've got amazing researchers and opportunities in organismal biology, biology education, applied ecology, evolutionary ecology and more!

Oh hey, looks like the Sydney funnel-web spider is actually 3 different species! Atrax robustus, Atrax montanus, and the new species, Atrax christenseni πŸ•·οΈπŸ•·οΈπŸ•·οΈ

Extra funny bc the genus of spiders that may be responsible for this egg sac w/a little rattail also have abdomens with varying looks that resemble rattails πŸ˜‚ (Look up Poltys spiders!) Might just be a lovely coincidence tho

In awe of this cool iNat observation by @nickybay.bsky.social of a spider egg sac featuring magenta silk. Never seen anything like it! Also some discussion on what it can be in the post, as another user has potentially found the same thing in Queensland. www.inaturalist.org/observations...
