It really is not far-fetched to imagine the US will not have an influenza vaccine ready to go next fall.

The Trump administration is preventing the NEH from funding research on large swathes of humanities fields of inquiry. Given the general lack of funding for humanities research, these restrictions on NEH eligibility will have a negative impact on many fields.

We can all bemoan the maldistribution of resources but what do we propose to correct it? A bad situation is about to become worse.

Whether you like or don’t like big grant culture & merit based funding patterns, the fact is that most universities including many public R1s devote almost none of their resources to supporting humanities research.

I’ve written about the retreat of private foundations but the coming decimation of NEH & NEA will completely devastate what semblance of support is available for curiosity driven research in the humanities except at rich universities www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...
