From Perry Bacon, Jr. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Our great-grand kids will wonder how we let democracy be destroyed by a man dancing badly to YMCA.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Can't wait for the first Amazon-led James Bond film, where Bond is now a kind-hearted billionaire obsessed with space travel who fights against the evil Bond villain, Carol, a National Park Service ranger.

Mediocracy at last!

No words. “My frustration is we are in a world where he has to choose between being electrocuted, poisoned or shot, and we can’t even get the most basic facts you would want to make that decision.”

This almost makes me feel sorry for Western Civilization. With defenders like these...

Connor McDavid wins it in OT

In the 30 years since I moved to Canada, this is the first time I have cared about the outcome of a hockey game. Thank you, Trump - making hockey nationalists of us all.

CSIS releases a report with info that any activist already knows -- that antisemitic threats are most dangerous and serious coming from the far right, and CBC inexplicably talks to a random cop who says actually, Muslims are still more dangerous. What in the fuck, CBC? www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

I wonder where JD Vance puts these fellow Christians who fled to our country for help on the ordo amoris spectrum

Ah, the same Ontario NDP that ousted Sarah Jama.

Whoa. Pierre Poilievre started a press conference with a question from the truly trash True North, has taken a question from Rebel News...and between every question you can hear a someone yell in the background that he's not allowing all reporters to ask questions. He's ignoring them.

Pay attention to your legal ethics and professionalism courses, law students!

"They're putting persecuted Christian refugees in camps in the jungle" sounds like something Glenn Beck would accuse the Obama administration of doing and yet now it's a pillar of the Republican agenda.

I have a piece at the LRB blog on the UK government's intention to permanently block refugees from citizenship.

“Some of the best foods carry with them the faint whiff of death.“ Well, this is brilliant.

Asylum seekers are deported to Panama, locked in a hotel without access to counsel, and then sent to a jungle detention camp which one migrant described as “a zoo with cages.” Among them are 8 children. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/w...

DEI is the most popular thing in this list lmao

Cowardly and unsurprising.

My friends, this is not how we do historical work.

I’m not sure the rest of the country fully grasps the panic and anger building in DC, MD, and VA. The entire economy of this area is about to collapse. Paychecks are stopping. Careers are ruined. Taxes are about to plummet. Yet no one seems able to stop this madness.

"Over the years, I’ve watched some batshit events. This one was right up there." This is brilliant.

An inspiring article on courageous community college leaders who are *publicly* organizing and standing up against DEI attacks.. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

The Association of American Law Schools joins the American Bar Association’s call to stand for the rule of law and against extra-constitutional change.

Ana Cecilia Reyes (born 1974) is an Uruguayan-born American lawyer who is both the first Latina and the first openly LGBT person to serve as a district court judge in Washington, D.C.

Even while Pope Francis is hospitalized, he still keeps in touch with a Roman Catholic parish in Gaza City, making near-nightly phone calls to the priest and congregation there.

In the piece I reflect on the silence of the former Vice President. Have a read and let me know what you think publicseminar.org/2025/02/an-o... @esglaude.bsky.social @democracyprof.bsky.social @bonniehonig.bsky.social @brockter.bsky.social

The humour we need in these dark days. “It’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you, Gaza, and I want you too, Canada, Greenland, and Panama Canal. I want all of you. Forever. You and me… every day.”

“There are currently four people remaining over there to do the work of 15 people. The danger to the national airspace can’t be understated." "This is a very real threat to the American flying public.” EXCLUSIVE ⤵️

While you’re distracted by the Canada/US hysteria, Canada continues to Canada

The sad thing is that email and admin have taken over academic life so much that many of us have to squeeze in the poisoning of minds on evenings and weekends.

“I don’t know how to explain to our daughter…that our own government is doing this to us.”

Big awesome news for left law and policy researchers and fans of @lpeproject.bsky.social @lpeblog.bsky.social @lpec.bsky.social @lpenyc.bsky.social: we're putting together a dues-paying member-based org. First conference this fall: law.richmond.edu/faculty/Inau...

“Of course allegiance had been expected of [the formerly enslaved] long before.” ???

Top judge ‘deeply troubled’ by PMQs exchange on Gaza asylum case

It's time to start a thread on higher ed budget cuts announced due to actual and potential cuts to federal funding. Northwestern is placing additional scrutiny on all spending and trying to cut non-personnel spending by 10% this year.

"Every international and Syrian aid group The New Humanitarian spoke to...listed projects that were stopping or about to stop, including food and voucher distributions, winter clothing for children, hygiene supplies, and water and sewage services in camps." www.thenewhumanitarian.org/news-feature...

Wrote about the morally vacuous, strategically unsound (and also wrong!) anti-“woke”diagnosis everyone’s still sticking with, even in the midst of civil rights apocalypse.

Cost-minimizing ≠ Efficient

The Times spoke to people being trapped inside a Panama hotel after deportation from the US and the individual stories of horror are almost too much to bear www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

Word of the day, for the umpteenth time, is ‘apricate’, the sister of ‘apricity’. It means to bask in the warmth of the sun, especially on a chilly day.

“It makes sense that our defence force is still in cahoots with theirs – Israel did sell us weapons during our war,” Jeyawadane explained to Al Jazeera. War criminals got one another's backs. www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/2/...
