I’m a prof and chair. I once added up the duties I was supposed to fulfill in a typical week and it was 100 hours without any research included. It’s actually an impossible job to do well.

I've heard some universities are planning to reduce the Poisoning allowance on a standard contract to frankly neglible levels. The days of an academic being able to work using slow poisons over a period of years are gone. It's all gom jabbar this, gom jabbar that.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a core part of the job, but the assumption by management is that they can rely on our love of poisoning minds — and a sense that this is work we're doing for ourselves as much as for the institution — to make sure we fit it in despite other workload pressures.
