which is why it does so much to fix him when the crew shows him he can survive & be cared for as part of a team of equals instead of standing above them on a hierarchy

so in the immediate sense it's about craving for power - but in a more fundamental way that he probably doesn't think about very directly, i do think he probably sees gaining power as the only way to survive.

don't be nervous! <3
i think this is true in a slightly complicated way - izzy thinks the only way to function in the pirate world is dominate or be dominated, and he doesn't succeed at dominating in his own right EXCEPT when others perceive him as acting on behalf of blackbeard

(fwiw i actually think there's a lot of other reasons izzy as first mate makes a good complement for ed's leadership style that mostly don't have to do with izzy being particularly competent, but that's kind of outside the scope of this)

given that after s2 we now know
1) djenks said explicitly ed sees izzy as a father figure
2) 2x08 established that ed will let a random fisherman he met yesterday beat him up with no resistance as long as the guy's hitting his daddy issue buttons
idk i don't see a big mystery here

i'm not very concerned with identity labels here. what's important is the toxic murder polycule is real in every possible configuration

and that's why the crew showing him that he can just be accepted as part of the found family instead of trying to dominate them is what gives him the grace to realize he can let ed be ed.

pre-redemption izzy's whole thing is that he thinks the only way to function in the pirate world is dominate or be dominated. and he can only dominate when his authority is backed up by blackbeard. that's why letting ed just be ed - letting people know blackbeard is just some guy - is unacceptable.

the fact that izzy does not command respect from other pirates except insofar as they view him as wielding blackbeard's authority by proxy is load-bearing to his character arc - that's why it's so vital to him that ed preserves the blackbeard reputation!

i'm literally serious. i guess you could follow it up with a scene where the employees form a union whose sole demand is having that supervisor murdered & they specifically ask that guy if he's cool with it & he says yes & then prepares to participate in the murder while grinning

when we got to “it’s actually really hateful to talk about izzy like he’s an antagonist” we had fully lost the plot and i’m glad stuff like canonizzyhours popped up to be like “no it’s not???”

i have to conclude -- as i have every time i've done this mental exercise -- that the only way to understand izzy as a tragic anti hero in s1 "just trying his best" is to straight up imagine a different show. you're free to do that! but i will excuse myself from the conversation then, thank you

conversely if it were important that izzy DIDN'T normally act like this you could easily put a different line here to establish that.
"wow, what's up with izzy? he's usually not such a dick." "idk, he's been acting weird since this gentleman pirate stuff started" - that's all you'd need!

this is striking because the line simply doesn't need to be there at all; the only thing it accomplishes is to establish that izzy habitually acts like this and that based on his knowledge of izzy, fang is confident asking him to stop would be futile.

“out of his comfort zone” is a crazy thing to say when the writers never bother to establish what his pre-canon comfort zone looks like. and the social ostracization is very clearly self-imposed, we see other ppl from ed’s crew get welcomed into the fold in s1 while he sits in the corner and sulks

i mean izzy SAYS that but we are never SHOWN any of this and in fact we are frequently shown the opposite. we see him question every decision ed makes and make ed’s moods worse and yank fang’s beard when fang questioned blackbeard. hardly massaging anything, there.

oh that's VERY interesting, for a guy who says he never apologized for jack shit (he's wrong, we'd already heard him apologize more than once by that point)
