Foods of Konso, #Ethiopia

I am in Konso, Ethiopia. The Konso Cultural Landscape was inscribed as a World Heritage Site of outstanding universal value in 2011. ZEF has been conducting research in the Konso Cultural Landscape in partnership with Dilla University, Ethiopia, since 2022.

🌍 #Biodiversity is essential for nature & people. @unesco.org, through its global networks of #Geoparks, #BiosphereReserves & #WorldHeritage sites, is driving transformative action worldwide. Protecting biodiversity calls for #SharingHumanity! 🔗 www.unesco.org/en/biodivers...

Say .... Chisel! Wooden commemorative statue (waka) Konso, Ethiopia In the olden days, the eyes used to be made of ostrich egg shells. But those are hard to come by these days. So they went, hey let's use roofing nails! They work well, except that they rust; giving the appearance of blood-shot eyes.

Let's get #Flyday started, shall we! African Pied Kingfisher mid hover, note how perfectly locked its head is (although this is hard to tell from just a picture). The pied Kingfisher has gyroscopic stabilization which helps it keep its head locked in place when hovering. 🪶 #birds #kingfisher #nature

Beautiful and Ancient line of Heronkind Argentina, they call them "Sunwatcher" for their tendency to stare, beakspear vertical to the sky. ☀️ Brazilians call it Socó-boi, referring to an ox for the bellowing sound they make 🐂

This is not a picture of the night sky with happy stars twinkling their joy away. This is dust spots on the sensor of my camera. Yikes! Finally got around to cleaning it.

You don't always need to have someone else by your side for #Twosday. Sometimes, you can make it into the list all on your own. A Marsh Sandpiper stares down at its own reflection. 🪶 #birds #nature #wetlands #reflections #narcisus

I almost forgot it's #Twosday! And for this particular Tuesday, I give you this: Courtship among birds takes many forms. A couple of African Fish Eagles bow to one another (female on the left) while a male Pin-tailed Whydah (right) dances its heart out to impress its partner. #Life #nature #birds 🪶

Practice makes for perfection We know most animals learn skills as young through play and birds are no exception although this behavior is poorly documented. Juvenile Pied Kingfishers learn fishing by diving in to shallow streams and "catching" pebbles; and pretending these pebbles are fish 🪶 #birds

Finders keepers ... It's all fun and games till we get to decide who goes home with the fly. Really, who gets the fly? The spider or the ant? #life #nature #insects

OK, let's end this #Flyday with a proper picture of a bird in flight Black Crowned Crane mid flight Those wings are huge, and them legs too. But what about the crown? Is it just merely the wind pusheing them back like that; or is this a deliberate in-flight posture to minimize drag? 🪶 #birds #nature

On this #Flyday, let me also give the very unusual looking but aptly named #hedgehog fly an honorable mention. There doesn't seem to be a lot about these on the webs and there are only 275 observations of them at inaturalist. From what little I know, they seem to be native to Africa s.o. the Sahara🪰

Let's put a twist on the long standing theme of #Flyday on this Friday and talk about #flies instead of birds-in-flight. Did you know longlegged flies such as this one play an important role in malaria control? They prey on mosquitos (and other insects), there by helping to check their populations 🪰

Papyrus boat by the lake Lake Tana, Bahir Dar - Ethiopia These fishing boats are still in use today and are made from the papyrus which grows abundantly all around the lake. No one really knows when people first started making them; may be 500 years ago? May be a millennia ago? May be more ...

It's #Twosday folks! Mama Sparrow with a fledgling Swainson's Sparrow Photographed in Bahirdar, Ethiopia - Oct. 2021 🪶 #birds #nature

Konb-billed Duck flanked by plastic bottles I took this picture in June 2021 at the Abay (Blue-Nile) river in Bahirdar, 🇪🇹. These plastic bottles may have made it to the Mediterranean by now. Do your part to reduce plastic waste. Buy less plastic products, recycle, dispose properly 🪶 #birds #nature

The Roc In Mid-Eastern mythology, the roc is an enormous #bird of prey which could carry a fully grown 🐘. This one here is not a roc; it's the humble Black Kite. But the angle and perspective make it look like a giant compared to the fisherman on the papyrus dingy. Photographed in Bahirdar, 🇪🇹 🪶
