Seriously, I did not know this. I had to look up the etymology of their names! I honestly assumed they were named Stonechat because they chatted away while perched on big stones :D

I thought it was because they liked stones that they were named so, silly me!

Oh wow Will! This is absolutely marvelous! I have tried God knows how many times to get the technique right for such a panning shot and failed miserably every time! Cudos!

You have seen too many አረግs etched on the edges of manuscripts; so much so that they are now permanently burned on to your retina and you see plants everywhere :)

Anything will fall apart if you take out enough bolts.

I love the details you give on this. It is an awesome looking heron for sure, but the extra info - and particularly the different names - is a nice touch. Also, reminds me of Ethiopians calling the African Fish Eagle "Wolf of the Sky" for its eerie wolf-like howls

I will give you ሮማነ ወርቅ፤ but ሠርጸ ድንግል is about light; not fruit :)

It's clearly NOT a lightning bolt; got to be a mythical bird of some kind even if it looks just like a giant cockerel.

That's a good start, now up the speed by 100x and you got a proper heron!

For comparison, this how the crown appears when the bird is stationary

Now here is a question; guess how long one of these boats lasts before the papyrus gets waterlogged and starts to break apart.

The proletariat are no more. Long live the consumer class. Capitalism will be fine without the first so long as it has the second. Labor can be substituted by machinery but consumption can't. Plus, so much of what we consume now is not really "goods"

And if in case you didn't know how uniquely beautiful the Knob-billed Duck (also called the Comb-billed Duck sometimes) is, here are a few more pictures I took of it over the years. I don't know of any other #duck as charismatic and imposing as it.

Also, the roc/rukh makes it in to Ethiopian mythical tradition via King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

Governments all over the world have this fantasy that ALL your data belongs to them. A good citizen simply MUST feed them with more and more data about their lives, habits, hobbies, various eccentricities, and such.
