[Norman Rockwell guy standing at town meeting meme] Lazarsfeld was right

Voters: It can't happen here (takeover by fascist demogogue who immediately undertakes purge of military leadership) Fascists: It can't happen here (soft, stupid strongman being shown the inside of a box by purged military leaders)

Important to keep in mind that this is the case even though Trump deprioritized people actually involved in criminal activity to focus on easier targets.

“He who saves his Country does not violate any Law." An unconscionable thing for a president to say, but Donald Trump's actions show he believes his words. The more he ignores Congress, the more derelict in its duties the institution becomes. Our editorial (gift link):

There’s not a word in this story about the corrupt nature of this dismissal. Not a concern voiced, not a question raised, not even an acknowledgment that he’s the president’s biggest donor and he’s acting as an unelected, unconfirmed tyro wielding unchecked power over spending and the civil service.

Still trying to figure out how to reconfigure the remedial American Government 101 crash course stuff I do with senior journalism majors, but this image and this link will be part of it.

Why is a Washington Post reporter using the phrase "Jan. 6 defenders"?

when i say that there are people who care less about workers and their rights than they do the primacy of a masculinist blue collar identity politics, i am taking about people like sean o’brien

Throwing this one into the "public policy is an agreement, not a barrier" file.

No reason this can't happen everywhere

If we could harness the power of Susan Collins brow-furrowing about this we'd have clean energy for the next 100 years.

This moaf both looks and thinks like Humpty Dumpty.

Being unable to answer this question is absolutely insane and completely without any precedent in American history. DOJ's official position is that the chain of command flowing from POTUS to DOGE not only doesn't pass through Musk, but they *don't know* who is in charge of it.

As usual, the national papers' good political reporting comes from reporters on other beats (education, government operation).

The logic here is the same as if Sysco hired the inventor of Coke-flavored Oreos to run its national distribution network.

Six years ago:

#20YearsAgoToday I recorded this clip of OK Go playing in advance of their second album at the Annex in Madison. They weren't doing their viral dances onstage yet, but they were dressed for it.

👇🎯 Normalizing unconstitutional & illegal behavior by polling it is bad for democracy & the rule of law

This is one of the grossest things NYT has ever published, and that's saying something.

Ah, cool, just doing the greatest hits of global white supremacy.

Might've picked the wrong summer to fly to literally the opposite side of the planet.

I've just published the sequel to this - charting the oppostion to the Trump administration's actions and what we can learn... BlueSky thread incoming! But here is the substack post christinapagel.substack.com/p/how-to-fig...

The rare anonymous opinion essay published by us over at @sun-sentinel.com. First time, actually, that I've published one in the four or five years I've been on the opinion side of the paper. This is from a USAID worker who, understandably, fears for their job www.sun-sentinel.com/2025/02/17/a...

Time for another round of scolding libs for being obsessed with identity politics.

These people spent months working to remove Joe Biden outside of the traditional electoral process.

"Trump administration removes flu prevention information during multiple flu outbreaks" is a very easy story to write at either the national or the local level.

The collapse of local newspapers is an incredible gift to the Trump administration. Right now there should be thousands of articles about how his spending freeze and mass firings are affecting local people and communities, but with no local media, most people have no idea how it affects them.

Bezos's creatures have never heard of the Streisand effect, apparently.

i feel like this is evidence for my view that people experience trump through a strong form of ironic detachment. they literally do not perceive him as real.

A narrative tic worth noting: When Biden pardoned Hunter, lots of ppl erupted saying “this empowers Trump to do the same.” But when Trump says he is above the law, no one replies “this will empower a future Dem to think the same.” And not bc “there won’t be one.” It’s deeper than that.

For those keeping track, @nytimes.com ran the story today on the bottom of page A22.

If you want to know how to break through the chatter and reach your friends and family, this is how. Find one small story and tell it. In detail. Tell the story and explain what it means. I posted this less than an hour ago, and it's already my ~12th most viewed skeet ever.

Sounds like it's time for another congressional hearing about antisemitism on college campuses.

BREAKING: PRESIDENT ROSS ACQUITTED AS SENATE FALLS SIX VOTES SHORT OF THRESHOLD TO REMOVE; TWO HULKS VOTE TO CONVICT

This is a really good and insightful thread, and also I don't believe that even 5% of the people liking and retweeting it are actually involved in Democratic Party politics. That is, a huge part of why this stuff is the case is that even engaged Dem voters see the party as "they."
